Jim's Story

Life After high school, I did a summer of hard labor in Hawaii, then went on a mission for the LDS church to Germany. After that, I messed around at Weber State College, taking some general and engineering-related classes but mostly participating in the concert choir and WS Singers. After almost two years, I met a special lady named Peggy Kent (Bonneville High class of '75), and we were married, after which I joined the Air Force. (Had to grow up and go to work sometime.) Through my service in the Air Force, I've traveled to Illinois, South Dakota, Delaware, Germany, Calfornia, Kuwait, Guam, and Saudi Arabia. I now live in northern California. Got 3 kids: 2 grown sons, and an 11-year-old girl. I also have a pretty little granddaughter now (see her picture on my profile page). I work as an aircraft electrician for Lockheed Martin at Travis AFB. Come visit me on Facebook; that's where I waste most of my time now. School School really didn't get great for me until my junior year, when I got involved in drama and choir, thanks to my best buds at the time (Ed McCully and Steve Wengreen). Also enjoyed working for the school paper my senior year. One thing I regret is not being able to keep in touch with everyone, due to my joining and traveling with the Air Force. College Spent two years at Weber State College, taking pre-engineering classes. Also was in the Acapella Choir & Weber State Singers, under the direction of Lyneer Smith; and the Concert Choir, under the direction of Dr. Ron Wooden. I really enjoyed my time there, but I wasn't really going anywhere, so I dropped out after two years to join the Air Force. During my AF career, I took some college classes when I could and managed to earn an associate degree (Aircraft Maintenance Technology). Now th...Expand for more
at I am settled in California and no longer in the AF, I am actively pursuing my Airframe and Powerplant certification, which will enable me to work on aircraft in the real world. I should accomplish this goal this summer! Workplace During and after high school, I worked at Barker's service station in North Ogden. (The station no longer stands; there's a McDonald's in its place now!). During this time period, I also worked for a short time at American Monument (a place that makes headstones), and the Mervyn's in Layton Hills Mall. Then I joined the Air Force, and stayed in it for 21 years. After retiring from the AF, I got a job at an aircraft parts warehouse inventorying parts. In April 2005, I started working as an aircraft electrician for Lockheed Martin at Travis AFB, CA, helping to upgrade the avionics on the C-5B aircraft. I am now very close to obtaining my airframe & powerplant certifications! Maybe then, I can get a job that will bring me back home to Ogden. Military Some of the most exceptional people I had ever met were military members (Army and Air Force), so when I decided to get married and had no really good career prospects at home, I chose to join the Air Force. I've had the opportunity to see the world, and I've met more of those exceptional people I so admired. I started out as a Minuteman missile site maintainer in South Dakota, but cross-trained into aircraft maintenance where I worked C-5s and C-130s in Delaware, Germany, and California. I retired Aug 2003, and I don't regret having served (but I don't regret leaving either). I was stationed at Ellsworth AFB, SD; Dover AFB, DE; Rhein-Main AB and Ramstein AB, Germany; and Travis AFB, CA. Been TDY to Guam, Spain, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Italy. Retired as a tech sergeant (E-6).
