Jim's Story
Life
Since leaving Oak Bay High School, I graduated from Uvic in Pre-Law....wrote the LSAT and did not get in. I tell my 3 kids the reason daddy did not get into Law School is "twenty cent beer". In 1970 I attented the BC Lions Invitational training camp and was told that I was "too small and too slow". Saddled with all this rejection, I started my career in Corrections at the infamous Oakalla prison in Burnaby in 1976. I dealt with such infamous criminals such as: Leonard Peltier of Wounded Knee fame, 3 Death Row inmates who had their sentence commuted to life (all 3 had killed a police officer). Despite the Draconian facility, you had to keep your sense of humour to survive. There was tons of overtime and we were all weapons trained. During one mass escape from a ballgame, I was more worried about being shot by my fellow staff members. In 1983, I transferred to a brand new remand facility in downtown Vancouver and in 1986 I moved over to Willingdon Youth Detention as a supervisor. By 1988, I had bought a house in Victoria and commuted to work in Vancouver for 5 years parking my VW bug on the Tsawassen strip. In 1993, I transferred to Victoria and eventually worked in local Probation Offices including Sidney. By the end, I ...Expand for more
had become an "expert" in putting together risk assessments for the Court dealing with bad guys getting out of the federal penal system. The High Risk Offender Program allowed me to bring all my skills to bear on a very worthwhile project that continues to this day. For the position, I received extra training from SFU, UBC (Dr. Robert Hare who wrote "Without Conscience" that deals with psychopathy ie. psychopaths such as Ted Bundy and Paul Bernardo). I worked closely with police agencies across Canada and the Northwest US. Entrenched paedophiles were my favourite target. My wife of 34 years is a BCIT graduate who recently returned to work full time for the Brokerage firm Raymond James. Our 3 kids are finding that not having a post-high school education limits the good jobs that are out there. Now that I am fully retired from the Provincial government, I devote my time to running my pet sitting/house sitting business and am a qualified "civilian" member for National Investigations (CSC) that go into federal penal institutions to investigate both natural and violent deaths of inmates. Very interesting work when you can get it. I look forward to doing more golf, fishing and tennis and linking up with old buddies.
