Jim's Story

Let's see. From Linn Mar to Coe and then from Coe I took a position teaching music in the middle school in Ogden, Iowa. It was a great year. I learned a lot and really loved the teaching experience. My wife was a Jersey girl and missed home, so the next year we packed our bags and moved to New Jersey and have been here ever since. Unable to find a teaching job I ended up becoming a programmer at AT&T. At the time it seemed like a strange change, but I grew to love the technical work and over the years have enjoyed being an architect (super-geek), manager, consultant, and even doing marketing work for a technology company. At one point I did a lecture tour of Latin America, speaking on Revenue Assurance in the telecommunications industry and how to apply data warehousing tools and techniques to that problem. I have had interviews published in English, Spanish, and Portuguese. (I hope they translated accurately!) Presenting to large groups through translators is an interesting experience. I learned not to tell any jokes that I hadn't pre-approved with the translators. (Or they may just tell a different, probably irrelevant joke.) It was fun, but over time the position evolved into 100% travel which led me to move to something that kept me home. In any case, now I'm an older, wiser geek. I married my college sweetheart a week after graduation. We have two daughters. One is a Music Therapist in New York City and the other is an Occupational Therapist in Brooklyn. My wife was a nurse, so her influence was a strong motivating factor. Unfortunately she lost her battle with pancreatic cancer in April. This June would have been our 32nd anniversary. Volunteering has been a part of our household. I was actually a Girl Scou...Expand for more
t leader for 8 years. That was interesting and made for unusual conversations at the office. ("What are you doing this weekend?" "Spending quality time in the woods with a dozen females. How about you." I was a volunteer EMT for several years and still teach First Aid and CPR for my local Red Cross chapter. I'm also on the board of a local museum and recently finished a term on the board of a community choir. While there's some stress in this I get a great deal of pleasure from contributing to the success of those groups. In the middle of doing all that I earned a brown belt in Shao Lin Kung Fu. I'm probably a danger to myself! Took me 10 years to get that far, and I was definitely the oldest student. Just over a year after making brown belt the school closed. That was four years ago. Eventually I'll find another school, but it will be starting over and I'm not as flexible as I used to be. That Bachelor of Music (yes, it's a "BM") doesn't apply much to my work life, but I sing in my church choir and the Cantabile Chamber Chorale (cantabilechamberchorale dot org). The latter is directed by a Juliard professor who has taught me a great deal about singing. Of course, anyone who sat next to me in the choir at Linn Mar knows that I had a lot to learn.. :-) Sold my vibraphone and drums years ago, but still have a couple of acoustic guitars. So, I left my job to care for my wife and soon will have to look for a real job. Turned into a short search - just got offered a spot at Sirius Satellite Radio! From then to now? I'm no longer thin. ;-) I've learned to enjoy many different foods. I have a better albeit similar haircut. Rapidly going grey. Better glasses. (and stronger) And a lot more interesting stories...
