Jim's Story

Life Alex is fast approaching 3 1/2 and just started going to preschool part-time. I felt a little sad that first day because I've been staying home to take care of him everyday since he was born and I'm dealing with the idea that I have to share him during the day now. I'm still happily married to the same wonderful woman, Ginger Fisher, I married over 3 1/2 years ago and we get to learn more about each other everyday, in addition to her being a wonderful mother for Alex. We are still living on the ranch here in San Luis Obispo and have more or less adopted to the rural lifestyle; when we visit her family--who all live in the city proper--I am reminded of how good we have it out here. I've shelved the copywriting course for now and am pursuing my freelance writing career in the evenings after Ging and Alex have gone to bed. There is a website called Xomba that allows me to submit articles to their website, after which they put Google Ads around it. The idea is that people will look for the information via the search engines, find my article, then find an Ad they like. When they click it, the money that is generated by the click is split 50-50 with the Xomba Admin. I'm still planning on launching two websites over the summer, too. School Criminy. This was a long time ago and seems like a whole other lifetime from what I am living now. But, I do get nostalgic for those days whenever I listen to some good 80s music, meaning the New Wave music I listened to back then. (Go KROQ!) Regrets: Not going to prom. Favorite subjects: History, Spanish II, Health, Creative Writing. There may be others, but these stand out. College I am currently taking courses from the American Writers & Artists Institute to become a professional freelance copywriter next year. More than likely, I will follow up with Graphic Arts course from the same school. Workplace 7-Eleven: After 10 years in the Navy, it took me a while to want to work for someone else. So, when I moved up to Arroyo Grande six months later, I got a "temporary" job to make some money on the side while I decided what to do next. As it turned out, my employer was someone who rewarded hard work and inititative (so unlike the Navy) and she created a new position for me: Merchandising Manager. I had the opportunity to be on a team that made our store one of the cleanest and most organized stores in the SW Region. My temporary job lasted nearly five years before I ran out of challenges. Loomis: After having worked indoors for the past five years, I decided to find a job that had some time spent travelling. Having known a few customers that were truck drivers, I thought about the romanticism of being on OTR truck driver. But, the one good sc...Expand for more
hool in Santa Maria that was run through the local community college had closed and moved to Bakersfield. So, I did the next best thing. I became a delivery driver for an outfit called Loomis Tank Center, delivering those large water tanks and septic tanks you see around. I did that for eight months before an opening was available for the company AA. For the next four months I did both jobs until we found a replacement driver and I have been AA ever since. In addition, I have been responsible for maintaining the company website, upgrading the HR aspects of the company (with help from my wife, who is an HR manager for the county), creating and maintaining price lists, and Internet and phone sales. As of March 2006, I no longer have any part-time work outside of home and my focus is exclusively on being a stay-at-home dad. I found that I missed time with my wife and son and enjoyed having both days at home to spend with them. Now that we are in Summer and moving into Fall, I spend time on the weekends out on our property either doing landscaping or getting the ground ready for a garden. The goal is to have a full garden and chickens by next summer. Military Let's see--ten years in the Navy on active duty. Joined to (1) get out of the house and (2) see the world. Except for boot camp and my first schools in Orlando, FL and one school in Lakehurst, NJ, which took my first 1 1/2 years of service, I was either stationed in or homeported in California for the remainder. During my career, I visited: Mazatlan, Mexico; Panama City, Panama; Hawaii (6 times); Okinawa; Hong Kong; Singapore; Jordan; U.A.E.; Kuwait; Bahrain; and, my favorite place of all, Australia. I've also been through the Panama Canal and crossed the Equator. I have been out of the Navy for a little over ten years now, which basically means that if I had stayed in this long, I would have been able to retire and draw a 50% pension for the rest of my life. Still, I look back at how much progress I've made in my own life over the past ten years as a veteran/civilian and I understand that I got out when I was supposed to get out. Besides, I would have probably spent the past ten years making circles in the water in the Middle East somewhere and I had my fill of that back in 1995. Looking back has also made me realize another, more poignant fact. Everywhere I've been save for the 32nd Street Naval Station in San Diego, where I was homeported, has either been closed or deactivated. I even found out that both ships, which I called home for nearly five years, are now at the bottom of the ocean off of Hawaii after having been used as target practice by Navy aircraft. Apparently, I was not meant to dwell on the places I was stationed.
