James's Story
Life
grew up in the BRONX, New York City....yes the Bronx....and because I had a Christmas birthday the Catholic School wouldn't take me because I was too young. So, I started kindergarten at P.S. 122 on Kingsbridge road( K -3). We lived at the Fordham Hill apartments and unlike kids today, my mom kicked us out of the apartment and we ran around by ourselves....going to Lotties , Doc's Drug Store, and Mrs Shaws playground......we also hasseled the girls at the Dayak Dance Studio. From what I understand, my friend Jackie Lynch still lives in the neighborhood.
GO GIANTS.
In 1965 my Dad got a job in Massachusetts and we moved to Framingham.
I attended BrookWater Elementary from 4th-6th grade...and had the teacher than made the greatest impact on my life....John Hurley. He was a real man, Former Army Airborne Ranger Officer.
Probably my greatest moment at Brook Water was when my best friend, Paul Miller, another NY refugee, got into a fight with the whole school because we were rooting for the Cardinals to beat the Red Sox in the 1967 World Series. We took a beating, as we should have, and that cemented our friendship.
My longest friendship was fostered there....and we still stay in contact...Gary Paresky.
Then came Junior High....for the first year I went to Winch Park School....and had a tremendous year in Division 7-27.
We only had 19 kids and they were the most bright and creative group I have ever been in class with. Pat Callaghan, Paul Miller, Barry Shuffitt (RIP), Tom TADY Brady, Danny Clinckscale , Leanne Hamler, Susan Oaker, and others. I found my first true love that year.....un named here.....and she will be forever in my heart.
Next, came the opening of the new MIddle School, WALSH, and most of the 7-27 crew became 8-15 and we had another spectacular year...with teachers like Jack JOHNNIE SHAUG Shaughnessy, Jim Walker, Mrs Sewell and Dyanamite Dave Harrow...
We added Ferdie Taygan , Glenn McGeoch, Sandy Cronin and the unforgetable Prinkie twins to the mix.
Stepping up to FNHS was something... I have great memories of teachers like Minicucci, Schlickman, Dargan, Ms OHara(she flunked me), Frau Rugo.....Stan Wade.
Speaking of Minicucci...who could ever forget SAVAGE DAYS???...where have you gone Carl Jickelli ?
My best Friend, Pat Callaghan turned this NY'er into a Celtics and Bruins fan. Sleeping out for two days at the Natick Mall in 1972 for Bruins playoff tickets was the an experience of a lifetime. JESUS SAVES, and ESPOSI...Expand for more
TO puts in the REBOUND!!!
Left Framingham in July 1974 to attend the United States Military Academy at West Point...and never looked back.
I graduated from West Point in 1978 and I spent six years in the military, three in Germany and three with the 82nd Airborne Division, where I participated in the Grenada Rescue mission in 1983. I left service as a Captain in 1984.
I settled in Chicago and have lived here ever since. My primary profession has been in Recruiting and building leadership teams, starting as Director of recruiting for Pfizer and in 1996 becoming an Executive Recruiter for a top ten firm, then founding my own company Nalepa & Associates in 2000. I am now a partner in a leadership training company- Academy Leadership and conduct leadership training around the country and the world. Academyleadership.com
I was also a twice nominated Republican candidate for the United States Congress in 1994 and 1996 and a delegate to the Republican Convention in 1996. Having lost two close elections I have retired as a candidate but stay involved by raising money for other political candidates. Just came within one vote of becoming the Republican Chairman of Illinois. That's like becoming captain of the Titanic...so I'm glad I wasn't elected.
I have Three beautiful children Max 26, a former Army Ranger and now a senior at West Point, and Jacqueline 24 a Flight attendant for SW, and James Alexander, 21 at University of Kansas.
I got Divorced, as many of us have, in 2017 and have moved to Florida. Currently in Ft Lauderdale on Las Olas and loving every minute of it. PARADISE. I see Bob Role and Debbie Bell from FNHS often.
Now that we've matured (well some of us anyway) and have left the anxiety of High School many years in past...I want to let you all know that I've enjoyed every reunion and seeing my classmates every five years.
The guys I stay in touch with are Pat Callaghan, Gary Paresky and Bob Role ( Bob has not changed).
I remember busing tables at the Chateau D'Ville and working at the old Sea N Surf....which like most of Route 9 has been torn down.
My 1969 GTO, which left enough rubber for 4 sets of tires around FNHS...was wrecked by my Mom in 1975....she was ok....but that beautiful GOAT...went to the scrap heap. OUCH !!!
Ah, Framingham, what have you become?
No FNHS?
No Green and Gold of the mighty " SPAH TUNS" ?
Jack Shaugnessy, RIP. Jack Hurley, RIP
And PEACE & prosperity to you all. See you at the 50th
Jim
