Jim's Story
Workplace
After spending the last two years of school preparing for a career as an auto mechanic, I started in a machine shop re-building fork lift engines.
After "leaving" that job, I went to rustproofing cars. That dried up in the winter of '78.
I left Cincinnati just before Christmas 1978 and moved to Charlotte, North Carolina, where my older brother lived, and started working in the grocery business (of all things) at Winn-Dixie in early '79. After 2 1/2 years there,I went to work for Kroger, when they had stores in Charlotte. That lasted 4 1/2 years.Went on to Lowe's home improvement stores. After 5 years of that, I had to get out of retail. Spent a year or so in a specialty food warehouse before they closed (long story). ...Expand for more
Spent 6 months job hunting before I found my present job. We are the "middle man" in dyes and inks for the textile industry. We buy crude dye from manufacturers and process it for use in the dye houses. Two of our largest customers are Burlington Industries and Papermate. I am the Production Supervisor and Assistant to the Executive Vice President. Business is pretty bad right now, since the passage of NAFTA. I may be changing jobs again, real soon.
I finally did it. After the announcement that, in order to keep the company open we would all have to accept 28% pay-cuts, I had to say "SEE YA!".
I'm now learning the electrical trade. Changed jobs in June of 2004. Never knew there was so much involved in getting a light to come on.
