Jim's Story
I still live in the cold, rainy Pacific Northwest. Certainly not like Yuma.
I went to ASU and graduated in 1970 with a BS in mechanical engineering.
I lived in California, just north of San Francisco for a few years and then moved to the Pacific Northwest and I've been here ever since. For the last three decades I've lived in Mill Creek which is a small town just north of Seattle.
I'm married and we have one son. He went to USC, met the love of his life (and eventually married her), graduated, and worked in California (LA) for a couple of years; then decided to come back to the Pacific Northwest. They live about three miles away, but I think we talked with him more when he was in LA. 8-)
I now have a granddaughter.
My mother, Margaret, passed away in 2003. A good life. Almost 91 years. I'm always happy to hear folks from Crane, folks I've never known, say what a strong influence she was on their life. (She was MY favorite teacher too.)
My brother, Chris, passed away in 2006. That sadness is softened with the knowledge that he lived his ...Expand for more
life fully and joyfully, right up to a culturally enriching trip to China just weeks before succumbing to cancer.
Most of my career has been in high tech electro-mechanical design. A few years with submarines and other naval systems in Civil Service and in the private sector; A decade designing voltmeters (I still see my designs in use where I work now and then on the Myth-Busters); A decade in aerospace (I'm no rocket scientist, but I have designs on the Space Shuttle); Six years in telecommunications; Four in dental health (Sonicare Elite); and now back to aerospace.
And now I'm retired, and loving it. It's my true calling.
My hobbies bore most normal people. I used to build model boats, but less dexterity and poorer eyesight have put a damper on that. they were all are wood. Most are sailboats that actually sail. I'm still into cars and I'm helping my son restore the MGB that I bought new in 1973. And I'm blessed to be so close to America's Car Museum in Tacoma. I've been a regular fixture there as a volunteer. ever since I retired in 2018.
