Jim's Story

Life (3/2009) I've been out on the West Coast since 1969, when the Navy sent me to San Diego, via Viet Nam. I've been in Oakland, CA for about 30 years, married 21+ years (no kids), and now semi-retired. Life is good! School I spent my 'formative years' at Homeville Elementary and Jr. High Schools, and had a good time at West Mifflin North. Favorite teachers - Ms. Galya & Ms. Moxley. Best buds - Leonard Petty, Rick Rodger. All in all, a good time at the lair of the Viking. College On to Duquesne University. Not a memorable experience, but I made it through with help from folks like Fr. Eddie Bushinski and grace from above. I still remember Gene Borelli, Mike Costanza and the Southside gang, among many others. I wish someone had reminded me at the time that one should not make life decisions too early. There is much more to life than getting a degree in accounting and going to work. Workplace Lots of jobs after my Navy experience. Worked for the Defense Dept. (baaaad job!), the Rucker Company (I had a good ...Expand for more
time and saw a few interesting places.), Hills Bros. Coffee (where I had the most fun and began to figure out what I really wanted in life), Kaiser Cement (another bad experience), and Kaiser Permanente, from where I retired after 18+ years. This was a good experience, but it took me a long time to realize that I didn't have a 'career' in business, I had a job that paid the bills and allowed me to do what I wanted to do in my life. I'm semi-retired now, managing Dunsmuir-Hellman Estate, a historic mansion in Oakland. Military Not long, but memorable. Six months in school in Athens, GA, where I met some great friends that I have to this day. It was good to be a young Naval officer with a decent paycheck in a college town! I certainly enjoyed it. My duty aboard USS Chicago was also pretty good. I got to see a bit of the Far East (not in-country, thank God) and made it to the West coast, where I settled. I still thank Richard Nixon for the 18-month 'early out.' (That's about all Nixon was good for, in my opinion.)
