Jim's Story

Life [Left Picture is my 15 minutes of fame - front cover of the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations annual report; Right Picture - I'm third from the left - this is a picture of the comedy quartet I sing in - We're called THE THREE GOOD LOOKING GUYS.] Hi Everybody - I left Salinas in 1976 to embark in high adventure in the Navy. After 2 years of "nuclear power school", I reported to a nuclear submarine out of Charleston SC. After 4 years of underwater fun near the coast line of Russian ports, I took a shore duty position at a nuclear training facility near Hartford CT. I left the Navy at the end of that assignment and went to work for Georgia Power at the Hatch Nuclear Plant near Vidalia GA. After four years of living just south of the middle of no-where, I decided to become an independant contractor. During the next 6 years, I worked at 4 different nuc plants in the Pennsylvania and New Jersey areas. After that I decided to head for the resort area of Wilmington NC and work for Carolina Power and Light. While attending a seminar in Charlotte, I ran across an old friend who happened to be working in Washington state. I mentioned to him that I'd like to get back to the west...several months later I landed a job with Energy Northwest at their nuc plant outside of Richland WA, where I am the Simulator Supervisor (see left picture). I love it up here. Although the area is "highland-desert", it is heavily irrigated (it's at the confluence of the Columbia, Snake, and Yakima rivers), and thus lots of orchards, vineyards, and oth...Expand for more
er agriculture. Plus, I am much closer to home after spending 20 years on the eastern seaboard. I have three sons...Mike - living near Portland and working on becoming a chiropracter. He is married to a wonderful lady and has a daughter and two sons; Jeff - who is living in Nashville and currently traveling as an audio engineer. He recently married his best friend, Candace and has a daughter and son through marriage; and Justin - living here and working for Ted Brown music (as an instrument repair tech). He is an avid runner and cyclist. After 24 years of marriage, my wife and I ended our marriage (the last 15 years have been very hard...with much of it my fault). After a year of single life, I married, Caryn, from Richland. With Caryn came 5 children, Derick, Sharise, Shayla, Marissa, and Trenton. In March 2008 I underwent gastric bypass surgery in Bogota, Columbia...it was an awesome experience. I lost 100 lbs and I weigh less than what I weighed in high school. Unfortunately, after years of carrying extra weight combined with an accident on the submarine I was stationed, my back finally got to the point where I needed surgery. In March 2013 I had 3 vertebrae fused and the sciatic nerve freed up. Life is good now! Back pain is gone and my right leg is back to normal. Life took an unusual twist when I recently stumbled across some things on my wife's phone that appear to be the end of our 10 years of marriage. I'm not sure about starting over again...time will tell. I'm looking forward to our next reunion! Take care, Jim
