Jim's Story
Life
After high school, I went down state to the University of Illinois for a bio degree and then moved to Virginia. After about six months in Va., i high tailed it for california. In cali, i got my teaching credential and master's in cultural anthropology and started teaching high school. I've been teaching ethnic studies, chicano studies, biology and U. S. and world history for the past 20 years. I got married in 1998 and had a beautiful baby boy, Conor born on January 3, 2001 and a beautiful baby girl, Shannon, January 2, 2004. I recently started working on an MFA in drawing and painting.
School
I grew up and went to school in Virginia Beach, Va. through 10th grade of high school. I then had the fortune/misfortune of moving to Buffalo Grove, Ill., where i finished high school and eventually attended U of I for my undergraduate in biology.
College
The first two years of college, i studied my butt off, then i decide...Expand for more
d to party for the next 3 years. I can't believe i was able to graduate. Grad school, was a whole 'nother ballgame. I loved grad school, however, and would do it again in a heartbeat. In fact, i wish i could finish my thesis and get that phud. Oh well, now i am working on my MFA in painting. so i have a new chapter in my learning experiences in addition to all the things my children are teaching me.
Workplace
I've worked in RUSD for 20 years. I've taught everything from Biology and Physics to History, Chicano Studies, and Ethnic Studies to what i do now, Drawing and Painting. Recently, i have been able to return to teaching biology. A colleague and myself have been able to create a biology/technology double classroom and team teaching program at Summit View High School in Riverside. Boy had i forgotten a lot of biology, Calvin Cycle, etc. But i am enjoying the relearning of environmental sciences and cellular biology.
