Jim's Story
After graduating high school, I went into the print and publishing trade as a typesetter. Little did I know that the Macintosh was coming and by 1990, my career was history. Through progressive work and self-training, I trianed myself to do computer support for Graphic Designers, culminating in a 4 year stint supporting Mac users at the Orange County Register.
After leaving the Register, I formed my own company, Maccimizer, which has been supporting Mac users in Orange, Los Angeles and San Diego counties since 1997. In the meanwhile I started and run a web store, done considerable internet development and developed skills in databases (everything from Filemaker to SQL), web servers, email servers and file servers.
Due to the declining economy, my business revenues have been slipping. In 2008, in addition to supporting my remaining customers at Maccimizer, I started working part-time at Santa Ana College (SAC) as an Interpreter for the Deaf, something I have been doing since 1981. I also started taking classes at SAC, culminating in an AA Degree with High Honors and a 3.89 GPA in Liberal Studies. Along the way, I was honored by a nomination to the USA Today All-USA Academic Team, and was named to the All-California Academic Team. I was also awarded the ICC Scholar award with Highest Honors by SAC Student Government and was awarded a Bronze Award for student service.

s High School, I became a student activist at SAC. Because of the budget crisis, we were facing serious budget problems and a potential loss of summer session. I conceived a plan for a student fundraising effort to earn money to put classes back on the schedule, and in a few months, students earned enough in conjunction with the Santa Ana College Foundation to add back one class to the 2009 Summer Session. This is significant because while we were able to add classes to summer session, both the Los Angeles and Long Beach Community College systems cancelled theirs outright. I am continuing my work as an alumni supporting SAC students on an effort to raise funds for 2010. I have never held student office, and the recognitions I received at SAC were based on my work as a grass roots leader working on the Summer Session Rescue Fund.
I transferred to California State University Fullerton, where I was admitted "with great distinction" where I am currently pursuing a dual degree in English and Linguistics. My eventual goal is to transfer to California State University Northridge, where I would like to earn a teaching credential for Special Education for Deaf/Hard of Hearing Students. I would like to teach young deaf children, focusing on areas of literacy. I may also pursue research in this area, as there is very little scientific data available on effective methods of instruction for this population.
