Jimmie's Story

I'm a little lost here so bare with me. I am not really sure what year I was to have graduated. I was thinking I was in the same class as my Aunt Jill Drudge so I put down '59 but because of a broken arm in grade school I had been held back one year so I may have been a year behind her. Now at 72 I can't remember those things. I quite school in my Sophomore year and on May 1, 1958 I left home for a tour with the US Navy which turned into eight years. I made several cruises to the Mediterranean visiting many sea ports in Spain, Italy and France to name a few. I participated in Operation Deep Freeze '63 to McMurdo Sound Antarctica. I was in Danag Viet Nam early in the War preforming Stevedore duties off loading supplies for the war effort coming home and discharged in 1965. While serving I completed my GED and took several courses being promoted several times. While in the service I met and Married a Virginia gal and we just celebrated our 52 year together. We have three living children three grandsons and two granddaughters. We also have a great grandson and great granddaughter. After being discharged and working at a couple jobs I went to work with the New York Central Railroad as a trainman and soon was promoted to freight Conductor. I worked for them as the company changed through mergers to Penn Central and finally Conrail from 1967 to 1988 when a service connected injury finally made me unfit for duty and I was forced into retirement at 48 years old. It was hard coping because I loved my job but I finally adjusted. I became a Ham Radio operator and that and Computers has helped keep my mind busy. due to my disability I work very slowly resting a lot but I keep my property looking nice an...Expand for more
d tinker with small projects. During the time I worked for the railroad we lived in Westfield, Indiana. My son followed me leaving school early but has become self employed in a successful business in upper Wisconsin. our daughter both graduated from Westfield High the oldest serving in the US Army for four years and later becoming a Dental hygienist. The youngest married and has two children and is a Cosmetologist. My oldest grandson also served in the US Army with two tours to Korea and two tours to Iraq. My second grandson is now serving in the Air Force just returning from two years in Okinawa. I am very proud of my children but they have a wonderful mother. I will put a picture of myself the day I left for the Navy and a present photo as soon as I round them up. If anyone remembers me being in their class probably in '56 or '57 I would appreciate hearing from you. Lamoine Leckrone, Paul Schumacher and Cecil Salyar I best remember from my high school days. I have looked over the two year books and remember some names but not the faces other then mentioned above. I have been though Silver Lake several times looking over the old home place two miles West of Silver Lake on 14 just a little east of old Franklin Schools location showing my wife where I came from but never came back to live. Life took me else where but my memories are of Silver Lake, the Lake where for a time we lived in a cottage and swam in the lake and the skating rink with is no longer there. I have had a good life but when my wife talks about her school days I have a hard time connecting because I missed out on what the rest of you had and I guess that is why I have loved those old school days TV programs and movies.
