Jimmy's Story
I began singing in the Suburban Park Elementary Chorus under the awesome Miss Dunn, and found that I loved music so much, that I continued singing in the Boys Chorus at Northside Jr. High with Oma Elliott, (Jarvis), and soon began studying piano with Mildred Daniels. As a senior, I was in Granby's Madrigal Singers, and Concert Choir, under Mickey Thomas, and Eleanor Walden, the Senior Class Play, "Seventeen," and did a short stint with the "Up With People" group. I went on to major in music education at ODU, sang as a bass in the St Paul's Boy's Choir under Jim Gallatin, was in ODU Concert Choir under John Davye, ODU Madrigal Singers, under Elliot Breneiser, with whom I studied piano-but majored in voice, studying with Glenn Hull; was a baritone soloist at St Andrew's Episcopal Church, and sang in the ODU Opera workshop productions of "The Devil and Daniel Webster," "The Music Man," "Camelot" and played the Artful Dodger in "Oliver"! I also studied organ with Dr. Charles Vogan. After graduating ODU I sang with the Norfolk Camerata, an early music ensemble under Jim Hines, sang in the Virgina Opera Association Chorus under Genevieve McGifford in the production of "Il Trovatore." I began my career as a full time Minister of Music at the Port Norfolk Baptist Church in Portsmouth, VA, where I conducted eight choral and instrumental ensembles, including handbell choirs, and a touring youth choir, as well as, a church o...Expand for more
rchestra. During this time I had the chance to study cello with Janet Kriner, marvelous Principal Cellist of the Norfolk Symphony!. I later completed a Master's degree in Church Music with an emphasis in vocal and instrumental Music Education at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, KY, while serving as Organist/Choirmaster for the Westside Baptist Church there.
In 1985 I moved to New York, where I taught vocal and instrumental music in both public and private schools, through a program called "Musication," was on the faculty of Dr. Trogan's Music School, teaching voice, piano, strings, and theory classes, and worked briefly for a music publishing company called Musica Vera Graphics.
Now, I've got the best job in the world- teaching little kids to sing and to play instruments! I teach Choir, Orchestra, and Band, to 3rd through 6th graders, as well as 4th grade General Music for a private school in LA. The students are amazing young performers, and I regularly take them to music festivals, where thy earn gold and silver ratings! I hope Miss Dunn would be proud. She'd probably just give me one one of her " Pretty goods!" -a statement that meant the world to me! I recently also retired as Organist/Choirmaster for a small church in my neighborhood, after 20 years of service there. Music and teaching have been my life, and, while, not always lucrative, have certainly been rewarding and fulfilling!
