Thomas J.'s Story
Workplace
My profession is nursing. I am an RN and work with severely disabled adults. My company has the only Adult Day Program in the area employing a fulltime RN or licensed nurse. This brings them a lot of business. My work in this program, is a Monday through Friday, 8;00 AM to 4:30 PM position where I give medications, perform gastric tube feedings, offer respiratory support and a lot of emotional support. Everything in my life came together to make me the right person to fill this position when it became available just when I was making a change in position from public health nursing. Nursing is not the only thing I do where I am employed. I also maintain all of the computers, printers and the network. You could say I am the go-to-guy there. I truly love my job. It has been a great growth experience in all areas of my life.
Lifestyle
I live in a small seaside community where life still moves slowly and we have an annual Avocado Festival. I have lived at this location since 1995 and still consider it paradise.
I am a guest speaker at local college classes several times a semester. My immediate boss and the Assistant Director of the Central Coast Program where I work know about the changes I have made in my life, as do my children, 90 percent of the people in my social groups and anybody who I feel comfortable sharing with. and out of the hospital several times since October of 2011 (My first encounter with Interstitial Pneumonia), I have had the opportunity to educate nurses, doctors, direct care staff and others regarding the changes I made in order to make my body congruent to my gender identity.
My most recent pet, Bear, was a Yorkshire Terrier who was ancient and a great companion, passed away in 2008. I don't plan on getting another pet until I retire. I am never home except to sleep and do my laundry.
I have two grown children, one in the mission field and one working as a software engineer for a major graphic card developer. I also have a beautiful granddaughter who just turned 4 on March 19th.
My hobbies include writing, graphic design and creative arts, all of which I learned while taking breaks from nursing during the past 20 years.
I live alone and love it. I also have a very active social life spending many hours a week with my Soul Mate, a beautiful woman, 2 years my elder. Our birthdays are on the same day and we have celebrated them together for the past 12 years.
I am now dealing with a pesky autoimmune disorder, which has left me with an Interstitial Lung Disease. It looks as if I will have to retire this year. I am hoping to remain in my job until the end of September 2014. September will mark 10 years I have spent serving these awesome individuals.
