Joan's Story
Life
I've been a librarian (cataloger) since 1990. Love nothing more than snuggling on the couch with our dogs, drinking tea, knitting, reading, and/or spending time on the interwebs. Married Christmas Day 1998 in Las Vegas (with "Elvis"!)and "honeymooned" by camping and hiking in the Mojave Desert in California for a week, and I've been living in North Carolina since June 1998.
School
Survived thanks to chorus and drama and the friends I made (and still have 20+ years later). Was glad to be smart, but not so smart that people disliked me. Favorite class: Mrs. Malarek's World Humanities.
College
The best years of my life - forget high school! I would give anything to go back to MHC for another four years. I a...Expand for more
m proud to be an alum, support the school as much as possible, and stay involved with alumnae events.
Workplace
While I was in library school, I discovered that I'd always wanted to be a librarian! My mom found my Dr. Seuss' "My Book About Me" and showed me that I had filled in the section "When I grow up I want to be" with "librarian" - at age 6, So it's not surprising that my over 30 years of library work have been fulfilling and interesting. I spent almost 8 years working at Harvard University Libraries, and then worked at UNC-Chapel Hill for 10 years, in the North Carolina Collection. Been at the Durham County Library since 2012, and I've really enjoyed the change from academia to truly serving my community.
