Joan's Story

Hmmm..I was in a life-story writing class a couple of years ago, and discovered that I really didn't WANT to write my life story; most of the other, very nice people in the class had wonderful life stories; they has terrific marriages, rewarding children, and never set fire to the Thanksgiving turkey (which I did, in 1967; unfortunately, I was on the phone with my landlord when the turkey fat exploded in the oven; I made the mistake of telling him I had to hang uo because the kitchen was on fire; he called the fire department; this dude with a hatchet strode in and ripped open the oven door so hard that I could never close it all the way again). Hopefully, you all see my point. My life story is not in the cards; instead, let me apologize to any of you whom I may have irritated or unwittingly made fun of in high school (well, it's not REALLY my fault that some people had haircuts that were really not that flattering, but I'm sure you have corrected that sort of thing over the years). I am so excited about this event next year; many of my friends (yes, I do have friends; not everyone has thrown up his or her hands and said "That's enough! I'm outa here!")have asked me why I am going to all this time and effort for a one-weekend event. I just reply, "You had to have grown up there to understand". We all shaped each others' lives (you boys who threw snowballs at me in the 4th grade KNOW WHO YOU ARE); the great teachers, the cherry cokes, the falling leaves, the VERY cool convertibles, standing on the stage at graduation (sweating under those gowns), not realizing that some of us would never see each other again. But hopefully now we can. Come on, people; flying from LA (no non-stops; what's with that?),is exhausting, and I can hardly wait to do it! You can do this! I always wanted to be a writer when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a dumb idea. As it turns out, they were right. I threw a whole stack of ugly plates against the garage wall once. That was very relaxing. White wine works, too. Katharine Hepburn. I always wanted to be just like her. Baseball. I could watch baseball all day. I have a tricked-out Dodgers child's pedal car in my living room. They all turned out to be WAY smarter than I was.(I'm talking about my children). If I won $100 million, I'd give most of it to random strangers, then spend the rest on Dodger tickets, Starbucks coffee and a ticket to see Neil Diamond. My current age is 69. When I was 12, I thought that people my age now...Expand for more
would be dull and boring. I was so completely wrong abut some of them. The "Story Wizard" wants to know what happened to my "first crush". Ha! Ask him! His initials are D. M. My best friend would tell you I'm slightly crazy, but people who don't know me very well would probably describe me as normal. Sports T-shirts and shorts(what I wear every day) I share my home with my highly disturbed cat, which I find satisfactory. I coached soccer for 20 years. Anybody want a cheap trophy? In 10 years, I hope to be alive, I think. I'm going to get there by praying for a medical breakthrough. My oldest friend is Loralee McNeill. She is the most loyal, patient, loving person. I hope my friends remember me as kind and caring, but I don't know that I earned either of those positive character traits when I was a teenager. Mostly, I was busy just trying to figure out who I was; too busy with my own self to focus much on being seen as a good friend to others. Most likely, people saw me as trying to be funny all the time, although I was very serious about my studies, and tried very hard to get all A's. When I was not doing homework, or hanging out downtown listening to records at DeLong's, or eating French fries and drinking a coke at Gallagers (is that how it was spelled?),, I was reading books or writing my infamous Martin's Mumblings Hi-Life column. It took many years of living before I fully appreciated the immeasurable value of friends, both new ones and the golden, precious gift of people who knew me when I was just a young girl. To all of you who have stayed a part of my life, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. I guess it must be time for a life update, since it has been 5 years since I first joined classmates and wrote this story. Since then, I had the privilege and joy of seeing many of you at the 2010 combined reunion and some of my class of '58 classmates at our 65th class reunion in 2013. (65th reunion? You've got to be kidding me! We're that old? Seriously?) I've lost some beloved friends since I first wrote this; gaps in my life and holes in my heart that can never be filled. My brother has passed away. I have had some medical problems. And yet...and yet...the sun is still beautiful and warm when I raise my face to it. My children and grandchildren are happy and well. I have "Hang On Sloopy" as my cell phone ringtone. The Dodgers were knocked out of the post-season, but there is always next year. Stay well and close to the ones you love, my dear BHS friends.
