Joan's Story
Life
Married 72 lived in Athens Greece till 75, Los Angeles 76 now S of Denver. 3 daughters: Savannah/26, Julia/23, Polly/21. Savannah studied abroad at University of Barcelona and graduated from CSU, worked at Crocs in Boulder as a design/merchandising liason for their fashion line and moved to New York City and works in fashion. Julia got her degree in paralegal and is graduating with her bachelor's in August. She's going to work as a paralegal for a year while preparing to take her LSAT's for law school next year. Polly is now a senior at CSU. She works with several children with autism as a Behavior Interventionist, as well as a research assistant in CSU's Psychology Department. She's had the opportunity to visit Europe and Brazil in her busy schedule too! I work at home doing the books for our contracting business, as well as at the local hospital in Medical Records. Avondale alums Sharon Halstead, Kelly Bergin, Debbie Stevens, Denise Schaeffer, and Sharon Manni all seem to be doing well and feel blessed, just like I do. Ken Ollila lost his battle with lung and brain cancer and we've lost about 10% of our classmates. I've scanned the 1970 yearbook and made a comunity album on this website. Sharon Manni lent me hers since I had such bad senioritis that I never bought one! It has been hilarious looking at all the old classmates. Sharon is as cute as ever and ended up in the same town as my youngest sister - Holl...Expand for more
y. We really enjoy our visits and I look forward to many more!
We had an amazing 40th reunion July 2010 in the gym and cafeteria of the old high school - just like our dances! The golf event and lunch were terrific. The after party at Rochester Mills was hilarious and it was great to relax at the Sunday picnic at River Woods Park. We had friends from the Class of 1966 through to the Class of 1981! Even our Swedish exchange student heard about it on facebook and combined a business trip to New York with a weekend visit to our reunion! It was so much fun that a lot of classmates are continuing to get together over lunch, golf and dinners, as well as car shows and the Dream Cruise. Facebook has been a fun, free, easy way to stay in touch so I encourage everyone to join up and list Avondale High School in your profile. It's great to reminisce about the past, share pictures old and new, catch up on our lives now and share our joys and sorrows.
Isn't it weird how one can still feel like you're 25 (or 30) but you look down and see the extra 15 (or 20!) pounds and the brown spots on your hand (my Mom called them liver spots!)? When did that happen? My husband talks about being old but I figure 20 years from now we'll consider these our spring chicken years so I'm going to enjoy! We are having a good time, have great kids and still remember where we parked the car at the mall. Life is good!
