Joanna's Story

Life Hello to those of you who remember me and are wondering what I've been up to all these years. I bought my first house in the City of Cleveland (don't worry, I stay loyal to my Steelers even in crowded bars with gorillas spitting at me), but I now own a house in the suburbs: Willoughby (willo-bee). I have two awesome boys and, although I am now divorced, their dad and I have a good coparenting relationship. In November 2019, I published a book of poetry called "All Shards and Paste". You can find it on Amazon. I'm still dealing with the grief of losing my brother, who you may remember, Edward W. Carman, lost April 17, 2004 in Iraq. The grief has become another layer of skin that I'm learning to live with. If you were once my friend, know that I think about you and wonder what you've been up to. Email me; I'm always up for catching up. You can also find me on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and the other socials (although I mostly post about poetry). xo, Joey School Ah, McKeesport Area Senior High School...some of the most dreaded days of my life, but also some of the best moments I've lived. You might remember me as being a little "crabby", "rough around the edges", or some similar mood. I'll be honest with you, by high school, all I wanted to do was learn what I needed to learn to get out of that town once and for all, to leave behind all the struggles and pains that come from a place like McKeesport. And mixed in - because you know I moved away and came back several times - were a few short stints in Texas, Florida and cities around Pittsburgh. I did a lot of travelling in my childhood. What got me through everything that's ever happened in my life, though, were the people who graced my life: my old friends, past loves, and mentors. You have all (yes, even you annoying boys that wanted to talk about skiing...Expand for more
during History class), helped me become the person I am proud to be today. Thank you. College College was nothing like what I'd expected. Unlike most of my peers, I didn't have the pleasure of partying my time away, as I had to work two jobs in order to support myself and pay for my own books. Don't get me wrong, I still partied a little (sometimes took my homework to the bar to do between games of pool), but not as much as I would have liked to. It was a struggle, for sure. Went through a marriage and divorce during that time, too. I learned some interesting things that I probably wouldn't have otherwise been exposed to. Loved my comparative lit classes, art history, anthropology and English language analysis. Hated math; had to take Algebra II three times to pass. Hey, F functions of f, your preppy little x in parentheses. In the end, though, I got my piece of paper and moved on. Workplace Currently I work ONE job (I'M DOWN TO ONE JOB!!!) in Cleveland. This full-time (and plenty of overtime) job is content development manager for a technical company that provides customized web applications and learning content. My job functions include project management, quality control, scriptwriting, storyboarding, and vendor/contractor management. I do a lot of little stuff in between, such as contract writing, budgeting and more. They keep me pretty busy, but, for the most part, I have a great sense of accomplishment at the end of the day. Military I almost did it after high school. In the recruiting process, all I had to do was get my physical exam and go. I decided not to. My brother said it was a good thing I changed my mind because I didn't have the right kind of attitude to get screamed at without screaming back. I would've spent my whole enlistment doing push-ups for telling my "superiors" to go lick some...
