Joanne's Story

Somewhat Weird High School Memories: Local boy Teddy riding his giant tricycle down the sidewalk after girls yelling, “Brrrrr, hot chick!” Watching Billy Jack movies in the little theater and then later seeing a senior walking the halls in a hat just like Billy Jack wore in the movie but this senior was called “Billy Jerk”. Watching “Bless the Beasts and the Children” in the little theater and feeling heartsick when the bison get slaughtered. Freshman Annie, who wore bright red lipstick and carried a red patent leather purse and looked like a throw back from the ‘50s. My first beer and cigarette at a keg party at the bay after Junior Ring Day. It took 37 years to get those damn coffin stakes out of my life. Hate beer – too burpy but wine is mighty fine. Riding the blue and white school bus down Bordentown Ave. while the crazy gray-haired male bus driver took all the curves on two wheels and laughed maniacally when we screamed. Attending school dances after spending a lot time dolling myself up only to get there and hold up the walls with the rest of the wallflowers. Having a parent drive me and my girlfriends to an all-boys school to attend their dance figuring I’d have better luck there getting asked to dance only to hold up the walls at that gym too. The two very pretty girls one year younger that were always in the bathroom at the mirror freshening up their hair and make-up. They did this so often that they earned the nickname, “Fluffs.” Attending a Hootenanny in the school gym where some students who thought they were guitar virtuosos played folk songs and sang along. Being taught to tap dance to a Bette Midler song from an actual ex-Rockette from Radio City Music Hall – Miss Sue Bratton. Playing the...Expand for more
extremely ungraceful and frankly quite disgusting game of crab soccer while sporting the horrid yellow snap on gym uniform complete with bloomers that made you look like you were wearing Depends under them. Religion class taught not by a priest or a nun but by some hippie looking dude that could have played Jesus in a movie. Participating in the school plays that had actual directors and costumes from New York. Weskits with a white or yellow back buttoned blouse with un-figure flattering vertical pleats and knee socks with a scratchy gray wool pleated skirt. Yuck. Having to express individuality with shoes due to the uniform requirement. Imelda Marcos, please. I invented having a shoe closet. Getting my first kiss at the age of 16 after a school play when I came down to the gym floor all excited and talking to my girlfriends when a boy, Brian Hempstreet, who was a year younger, swooped in and planted a wet one right on my lips. I was horrified I could no longer say I was sweet 16 and never been kissed. All my friends laughed themselves silly while I wiped my lips with the back of my hand in disgust. Buying prom bids 30 seconds before they closed and attending with my friend Mary Alice Straub. I think the guys who escorted us liked each other best – they were attending the Designer Fashion Institute in New York, but who cares? They both danced great and were not shy like the rest of the moron boys that never asked me out in high school. Getting nothing really out of senior retreat. Protesting a porno movie theater on Rt. 9 in Old Bridge with my mother and Rich Wilson. Now-a-days you can just press a button on your remote and get all the smut you can “handle” right in your own living room. Going to all the graduation parties the summer of 1975.
