Joanne's Story
Life
I am 53 (YIKES!) years old. How did that happen? In 1976, I left home to live on my own for the first time. Two years later, I married my landlord! After that didn't work out, I became a born again Christian and I've never (well, only occasionally) looked back. My only regret is that I never had any kids of my own, so naturally, I borrow all my friends' kids. My best friend had twin boys at 40 and asked me to be their Godmother. I try to see them a lot. Over the years, we have had lots of great times. About 4 years ago I moved back home to take care of my Mom (my Dad died in 1991). That has been a real experience. Talk about finding out how selfish you (meaning me) can be! Taking care of her has really opened my eyes to what incredibly hard work being a Mom is. My hat's off to all of you! But, since we've managed this long without murdering each other, I guess we'll survive. All in all, my life is terrific, I've got an amazing C...Expand for more
hurch family, my sisters still live close, my extended family (cousins) gets together quite often and I have steady employment. The Lord is good!
Workplace
I spent 14 years at Simplex Time Recorder Company doing a job I LOVED (unfortunately, my boss and I didn't). When I left there, the economy was almost as bad as it is now, so I worked a lot of temp jobs. In 1998, I fell into a situation where I ran a bookstore/coffee shop (a mini Barnes & Noble) with the prospect of buying the owner out eventually. Unfortunately, B&N opened up in the next town, and we all know the name of that tune! Once again, I am working a temp job (although it's more like a permanent temp job) at HP. It's a good job, but, no benefits. My real dream is to open my own business, but for that, you need capital and with so many carreer bumps, that's not a commodity I have in large supply. But, as Scarlett O'Hara once (or twice) said, "Tomorrow is another day"!
