JoDean's Story
Life
Hi! I haven't updated this for a while! I live in Northern California with my husband (Ben) of 20 years. Ben and I are both physicians. I resigned my academic position to do more creative things. I write now, and edit a magazine. I also consult and teach when I can. I ride and train my horses(Chance, Jimmie, and Bear). I also enjoy trail running, and backpacking. I am President of the California State Parks Mounted Assistance Program, and I patrol on horseback several times/week. Long distance hiking is one of my favorite things, and I take several weeks each year to walk the Appalachian Trail. I also enjoy reading and writing. Ben and I rescue greyhounds, and currently have two (Charlie and Bruiser). One of my long term goals to participate in horse rescue, which is how I got our newest horse--Bear. He is an Azteca I rescued from Mexico. We have several acres of pasture space, and I would like to build my own barn, and bring my horses home instead of renting space. Update more soon. Thanks to all who have written and shared their lives in these profiles.
Work as a physician has been up and down. I have spent a ...Expand for more
great deal of my career training other MD's in my specialty. I like teaching very much. I tend to like the hospital work better than the clinic work because it is more cerebral, and I learn something every day. I branched into other areas outside clinical care because I got disillusioned with medicine in many ways, including the insidious presence of the profit motive from pharmaceutical and insurance companies. Also, I feel better doing creative work, rather than limiting myself to linear, left-brained work.
Obviously, if you have looked at my site, the horses have changed my life. It keeps getting better and better.
I feel really energized by writing, and when i can focus on it, I try to do it. I was in the right place at the right time and ended up editor-in-chief of a northern California magazine, which has been challenging but very rewarding. While I spend much of my time doing layout and editing other's pieces, I do get a chance to write, and when the mood strikes me I try to get the words down. Horses and the Appalachian Trail are definitely my muses. Hoping to write a book, but will start when it grabs me.
