Joe's Story

Life Well I guess it is time for an update since it has been about 2+ years since one. First thing I am now a daddy, my wife and I had a little boy named adam on September 29th 2005. I am still working in the oil patch. I am now subsea Supervisor on the SEDCO 707. Currently working in the Brazil district, mainly off the coast of Rio. I worked in Nigeria for a bit and hated every minute of it so I left the oil patch temporarily and went to work as chief engineer on a factory freezer for a short stint. But since Noble hired me on and offered me subsea I came back to the oil patch. I wanted to try my hand at something different. After Gaining some experience as a subsea engineer on the Noble Roger Eason I was offered a Job as Subsea Supervisor on the Sedco 707 which I accepted. I am still living in Hampton where I purchased a house in 2003 after living all over the country. Spent 7 years in Ontario from 90 til 97 and 5 years in Halifax 97 to 02. But like the old saying holds true, there is no place like home. I spent 7 years in the navy where I was a Marine Engineer onboard HMCS Athabaskan.Of course only after graduating from Marine Engineering Technology from St. Lawrence College in Cornwall ON, under the METTP (Marine Engineering Technician Training Program)in 1997.Once I finished my contract with the navy in June of 2001, I opted for Civilian Life. So after finshing off all my requirements for my Civilian ticket in Marine Engineering I took a job on the SSDR(Semi Submersable Drill Rig) Eirik Raude as 2nd Engineer. After about 2 years on The Raude I wanted to gain more experience as I had full intentions of obtaining my 1st Class Marine Engineer Certificate. So I ventured out with resumes and was picked up by the Deep Water Discovery a Transocean rig out of the west Africa region mainly Nigeria. Spent a year there and then pretty much became an industrial prostitute going to the highest bidder. I will likly retire from the oil patch because i guess i am kind of spoiled , the money is good and the best part is equal time off. 28 days on followed by 28 days off. I am married to the most wonderful woman I have ever known, Shaun Marie Wallace now Doucette of course, and our children consists of Adam as wel...Expand for more
l as two Jack Russel terriers named Bugsy and Blossom. And although I never thought I would see the day I became a daddy, I gotta say it has definitley changed my life for the better. I always look forward to spending time with my adorable family. Workplace I am presently working on the SEDCO 707 as Subsea supervisor. Like my previous jobs I am still employed in the oil patch. I did leave it for a short time back in Nov of 04 but I came back in Feb 05. I guess it is in my blood. I did switch hats though as all my previous jobs I was a Marine Engineer. Here I wear the hat of the subsea Engineer. I am currently working In brazil. Just off the Coast of Rio de Janiro. It is not home but it sure beats Africa. I was working in Nigeria for about a year and I have to admit I hated every second of it. But sometimes you gotta do a job you don't always like. While in Africa I was employed on a Class 3 DP (dynamically positioned)Drill ship ,the Deepwater Discovery as Second Engineer, off the west coast of Africa. I joined the Deepwater discovery in Oct of 2003, coming over from the Eirik Raude a Fifth Generation Semi Submersable Drill Rig.I have been working in the oil patch since leaving the Navy in 2001 and will probably be doing this until I retire, I enjoy my job because the money is good, but I am planning on retiring young, say 45ish, Than I am really going to enjoy life with my loving, kind and supportive wife,Shaun Marie and my son Adam. Military I joined the Navy in 1994 under the METTP program. I attended St. Lawrence College in Cornwall, Ontario, where I was a member of the last METTP graduating class in 1997. I obtained my diploma in Marine Engineering and was then posted to The Athabaskan in 1998 where I served the remainder of my 7 year contract until my release date in 2001. While serving on the athabaskan I did two NATO's, Early 99 and Early 2000. I released right after my contract was up in 2001, I than worked for a short While With the CCG, and still work there on a casual Basis, but my First Full Time Job after the Navy was with Ocean Rig as Second Engineer on board the Eirik Raude, from there I went onto work for Trans Ocean as Second Engineer onboard the Deepwater Discovery in October of 2003.
