Joe's Story
I'm from Chicago, Illinois, attended Christ the King grammar school for 8 years, left Chicago in 1965 for St. Augustine Seminary in Holland MI. Two years later I started at Brother Rice, played rhythm guitar in the Rubber Band and performed folk music in local coffee houses. I attended Western Illinois University for 2.6 years before dropping out to do something relevant, like drive mass transit busses on Chicago's south side for 4 years. I also married in 1973 and had a son Paul, born in 1975 who works as an educator of the deaf in Honolulu.
Between 1968 and 1984, I developed addictions to alcohol and cannabis, the former nearly killing me by age 32. In remission by age 33, I finished a BS in English at University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point and an MS in counsel...Expand for more
ing psych at University of Wisconsin- Madison in 1988. Since then, I've been married twice more, lived in Nebraska, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island, working as a psychotherapist specializing in the treatment of addictions. I currently work as a consultant at Brown University's teaching psychiatric hospital with adolescents in crisis. I also maintain a small private practice in East Providence, RI. I've been married to my current spouse (the current dean of the curriculum at Brown) for 24 years.
My interests include addiction science, Buddhist spiritual principles, blues guitar and piano and recently playing the drums.
