Joe Or Gene Millard:  

Gene Millard attended a one-room school from 1941 until 1950, graduated from high school in Jefferson, Iowa, and received his Bachelors of Arts degree from the University of Northern Iowa with a degree in social science/history. He completed his Master of Arts at the University of Northern Iowa in secondary school administration and his PhD in education from Iowa State University. Gene dropped his childhood nickname and became Joe when he became a high school principal in Story City Iowa. He worked 40 years as a high school teacher and school administrator. As a school administrator he severed on the Iowa Academic Decathlon State Board, the Des Moines Diocesan Board of Education, and various state committees studying year round schools and gifted and talented programs. He received the Outstanding Service to Iowa Students Award from the Iowa Academic Decathlon Board and the Contribution to Iowa Education Award from the FINE Organization, an Iowa business organization which promoted research in education. Joe has taught audio visual education courses at Iowa State University, educational measurement at Drake University and sociology classes at the Des Moines Area Community College. As an educator he has published articles in The Clearing House, School and Community, the Kappa Delta Phi Record, Audiovisual Instruction, and Kansas School Board Journal. His research has been published in the Journal of Educational Research, and the Educational and Psychological Measurement, and he was a consulting editor for the American Educational Research Journal. His stories have appeared in Wee Wisdom, Good Old Days, and Glimpses, Iowa Rural Legacy.
