Joe's Story

Hi to all that read this, if we were friends send me an e-mail, I would like to hear from you. I Was Born&Raised in San Antonio, 1st to 3rd grade St John Catholic school, 4th-6th Will Rogers,7th-9th Mark Twain, 10th-12th Thomas A. Edison H.S. (ROTC LTC 2nd Bn Cmd, Rifle Team Captan) 08/71 joined the U.S. Army, basic training Fort Polk, La (C 5/2) Thanks to my girl friend she talked me out of going Armor or Infantry instead I trained in electronics. Missile guidance repairman, MOS 21S, I went to Ordnance school Redstone Arsenal Alabama, (RSA) after 6 months of training I shipped out to Korea for 13 months. I flew out of Oakland, Cal. Air Force Base. I was there 5 days waiting to catch a flight to Korea, Army NCOs don't let you sit around when your a PFC (Me). I puled KP at the Stake House, all Vietnam GIs coming home came to the Stake House for there first meal in the U.S. I got to talk to a lot of them. I enjoyed the hell out of Korea, I departed Korea with an ARCOM for 8th Army soldier of the quarter and on the E5 list. Went back to RSA for 18 months, I was promoted to E5 and was a member of the Color Guard. 8/74 got married, 11/74 shipped out for a three year tour to Vichinza Italy. Unfortunately after only a year in Italy the Army deactivated the missile system I worked on. So in 01/76 I got promoted to E6, then we drove to Hanau Germany. upon arrival the Commander put me in charge of the Lance Missile repair platoon MOS 27D30. After a year or so the Commander asked if I would like to work as a 27B30 LCSS electronics repairman. We did 27 months in Germany, my daughter was born in Frankfort 11/77 (loved the people and enjoyed touring Europe). 03/78 came back to RSA for school training as a 27B30. 01/79 we drove to Fort Sill Oklahoma. It was nice, May of 1980 anyone who could speak Spanish of rank E5 and above (me) were sent to Fort Chaffy Arkansas to process over 22 thousand refugees from Cuba. I was there 14 days working 12hrs on 12 hrs off, I found it rewarding to help so many who came with so little. 07/80.my son was born. 12/80 we were sent to Frankfurt Germany and promoted to E7 (SF...Expand for more
C) enjoyed most of it. 09/82 got divorced. 9/84 I arrived Fort Hood, Tx. Loved being home. Went to NTC 3 times, 1986 went to my EHS 15 year reunion, I tried to keep in touch with one. I deployed for REFORGER 87 when it was over I volunteered to come back aboard a ship with the vehicles and equipment our unit shipped over, shipped out of Bremerhaven Germany 8 days later the ship arrived port of Baltimore Md. After 7 days all the equipment and vehicles had been loaded on a train, that was a mile long and I got to ride in the caboose. First to Chicago then to Fort Hood Tx I don't recall how many days on the train but it was more than 4. A lot of firsts happened at Fort Hood, sky diving, four wheeling and my first new car 1985 Doge Laser (red). 07/88 Back to Hanau Germany the same unit I was at my first time in Germany. I went to Berlin shortly after the wall came down, Idid bring a good size chunk of the wall back. This was my last tour and every weekend I went some where new. 09/90 half the US Army in Germany went to Desert Storm, I happened to be in the half that stayed. 11/91 we returned to RSA. 01/93 Retired from the US Army. Now live in Madison Alabama, 09/94 to 07/11 worked for the USPS as a mail processing equipment repairman at the regional processing center in Huntsville. If back in 1971 I would have gone in Armor or Infantry I more than likely been sweeping floors rather than fixing equipment and getting payed a lot more and enjoying my job. I enjoyed my job and the people I worked with the hardest part was getting used to not moving every few years. Finally I retire for good at age 59. Now I do as much as I can so I have little to do later. One day not soon I hope I will be going back to San Antonio to stay. Assuming my grand son does as Ive requested and spreads my ashes along the river walk and old Hemisfair plaza. The pumpkin is gone but the memories are still there. P.S. Been married twice 8yrs and now going on 27yrs. Two kids Boy & Girl in there 30s two grandsons and a granddaughter on the way in October 2017. We also have 7 cats. And I Love them all the same, except the X wife.

I miss my 54 Ford. This is the only good photo I have found. No power anything just an 8 track tape deck and 3 speed on the floor.
