Joe's Story
Life
Well, it all started in 1964 when my mother and father.....I'll skip all that since most of you didn't meet me until 1981! Anyway, after high school I raised my right hand and signed a contract with Uncle Sugar which said something about supporting and defending the Constitution of the United States, and obeying the orders of the President. They left a lot of stuff out of that contract, or so I thought. READ THE FINE PRINT!! Sugar sent me to Lackland AFB San Antonio for six weeks of basic training (ended up being 2 weeks of basic training since I took JROTC). Since I wanted to be a cop, they kept me there for six more weeks to attend the academy. Just when I think I'm leaving San Antonio, they tell me I'm going to Korea and that I need to stay another eight weeks for more training. First of all, the only thing I knew about Korea is what I saw on MASH, and second, why do I need more training to go there? Well, since only a cease-fire was agreed upon and no peace treaty was ever signed between North and South Korea, they're officially still at war. So I had eight more weeks of firing machine guns, grenade launchers, rocket launchers and learning how to defend a base like an Army infantryman. This training wasn't conducted in the comfy confines of a base, but out in the woods at a lovely place called Camp Bullis. I finally made it to Korea in March '85. The next 18 1/2 years are a blur so I'll just show you the Joe Oliver World Tour. Mar'86 - departed Kunsan Korea enroute to Nellis AFB, Las Vegas, NV. Sep '88 - Had a little talk with Jesus, told Him I wanted to join His camp. It works great - when I listen to Him!!! Jan '89 - went back to Kunsan, Korea as a Stinger Missile Team Chief/Gunner. Jan '90 - Received orders to go to Malmstrom AFB, Montana. I definitely didn't want to build me a home where the buffalo roam so I threw the assignment back and stayed in Korea another year, moving a little farther north to Osan Air Base. Feb '91 - Volunteered and was chosen for an assignment to Tonopah Test Range, NV, first home of the F-117 Nighthawk (Stealth Fighter). Deployed to Saudi Arabia from Jul - Oct '91. Got married in Dec '91. In '94, was approached by a special agent from the Air Force Office of Special Investigations and asked if I was happy being a cop. I said no, he recruited me and I attended the USAF Special Investigations Academy from Sep - Dec '95. Feb '96, we moved to Robins AFB in ...Expand for more
Warner Robins, GA. Feb - Aug 98 I deployed to Ahmed Al Jaber Air Base, Kuwait (best assignment so far). Jun '99 I got divorced and moved to Royal Air Force Station Lakenheath. Remarried my ex-wife in Dec '00. Jun '01, moved to Hill AFB, UT, where I still am. Divorced for 2nd time in Feb '03. Deployed to RAF Fairford, UK from Feb - May '03. Countries visited: Mexico, Honduras, Japan, Korea, Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, England, Scotland, Ireland, Germany, France, Belgium, Iceland, Norway and Portugal. I'm at the 19th year of my career and I can retire next year If I want to. I thought that I would've already applied to one of the better known federal agencies by now but I have one of the best jobs in the Air Force. I investigate felony-level crimes such as rapes, murders, suicides, kidnappings, assaults, drug use and distribution, theft, fraud, computer crimes, child pornography and espionage. Bet you didn't think that kind of stuff happened in the military!! I just may hang around here for another year or two before I release myself on the public!
NEWSFLASH!! I've had all I can stand, I can't stands no more!! I am now retired and I'M still in Utah. ANOTHER FLASH...On September 20, 2006, I answered God's call and I'm now an associate minister at the Hill AFB Inspirational Gospel Church. On 17 Dec 07, I married the former Ms Detorea Wilson and we are living an awesome life together with three wonderful children. Wow...a daddy overnight...I LOVE IT!! Pictures to come...YET ANOTHER FLASH!!! God is pushing a brother to new heights! The Oliver Clan has grown by two more. Our first addition is Mikaya and she is now 17 months old. She is my sister-in-law's child but since she wasn't able to take care of her, we were blessed to be asked to raise Mikaya. Our other addition is Barbara, who is a college student. She was a Job Corps student that attended our church. We kinda sorta adopted her and she decided to stay with us while she attended college rather than go back to California. She is a huge blessing to us! Finally, God has led all of us to a church where we all have active roles. Detorea is the Minister of Music (an awesome one) I am an associate pastor/choir director/audio-video technician and security consultant...whew! I just played with a guy's bass guitar and now I'm hooked...maybe I'll be playing with Detorea in the near future! She told me I can buy a bass guitar! More to come.
