Johanna's Story
After graduation I attended the University of Minnesota for only one semester. I got married in Apr.68 and moved to Chicago Il. where I still live. My husband Bill was in the army at the time of our marriage stationed at AFEES in Chicago. He was discharged from the service in Jan 69. He worked for awhile as an X-ray tech until joining the Chicago Police Dept. in 70. I joined the Chicago Police Dept. in 76 in the first class of female police officers. I was the first female police officer involved in the shooting/killing of an offender . I worked in patrol until 1980 when again I was in the first class of females promoted to Sgt. I worked as a Sgt. in patrol until my retirement in 1999 when I started arresting the children of former arrestees that were now adults. atives and for Bill to participate in bowling. Later Bill took up golfing and golf club building. I also began golfing so then we took golfing vacations with some friends in different locations around the country. We also adopted stray dogs with the current count being a total of 15. I currently have a wolf and a rottweiller/chow mix. After I retired I took a trip back home to Austria with my sister and some of her family. It was the first time I had been back since we came to the US in 1957. It was a wonderful 3 weeks even though I managed to get ripped-off of all my money in Vienna. The last 6+ years have been spent as a caretaker for my husband. After many trials and tribulations Bill died at home of pancreatic cancer on Nov.21 2014. Since then I have been trying to clean my house. This is an ongoing process since Bill was a pack rat with many various interests.
