John's Story
I've been married since 1991, have a 10 year-old daughter I adore, and a house in quiet neighborhood 3 miles from the beach in North Monterey County, CA. The weather is good and what passes for winter only lasts 2 months. I rarely miss snow (except around Christmas) and go to the Sierras to remind me why I don't miss it.
After high school, I went to Texas A&M University for a year but I didn't really know what I wanted to do. I came back to Anchorage, worked some dead-end jobs and decided to join the Navy.
I served in the Navy for five years (1981-1986) and enjoyed it. I was stationed aboard the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise (CVN-65) from 1981-1983. While...Expand for more
deployed on a WestPac cruise, I visited Australia, Japan, Kenya, the Philippines (twice) and Singapore. I liked Australia so much I went back on leave and spent a couple of weeks there.
In the Indian Ocean, off the coast of Somalia, the Enterprise crossed the equator and I was duly initiated into the "solemn mysteries of the ancient order of the deep" -- thereby advancing my status from lowly polliwog to that of a shellback.
After the Enterprise, I was assigned to shore duty in Monterey, CA. I loved it and have lived in the area ever since leaving the Navy.
In the Navy, I taught myself computer programming and have worked as a software developer ever since.
