John's Story

Military I joined the Royal Canadian Army Cadets (RCAC) September 9, 1999. I started out as a cadet and completed the "Green Star" level of training by May, 2000. I attended Vernon Army Cadet Summer Training Centre (VACSTC) for the basic familiarization course for 2 weeks at the beginning of July 2000. For that course I received the "Top Cadet" of 20 platoon (plt). When I came back, I was promoted to the rank of Private. During the year of 2000-2001 I completed the "Red Star" level of training and for the Annual Ceremonial Review (ACR), me and my friend Rob Gordon and Dan McIntyre were the only 3 privates on the Colour Party. That summer, I returned to VACSTC to complete a six week course of a "Cadet Leader" course. The following October I received the rank of Corporal, completed my "Silver Star" training level that year (2001-2002) and then returned to VACSTC. This time, I was attempting to complete the "Cadet Leader Instructor Band" course. Here I made many friends and I showed my best this year. I was appointed the acting "Company Sergeant Major" (CSM). My course report looked good when I came back home, but only received the rank of Master Coporal. During this year it was gonna be a challenging year as I was taking the National Star Certification Exam (NSCE). NSCE is the hardest test to accomplish in a cadet career and it takes years of training to acquire the knowledge that is required to complete it. I went into the Exam with the most knowledge out of the four candidates attempting to conquer it and I was the only one who went home without it. My Commanding Officer (CO) at the time called in because he knew himself that I shouldn't have failed with the way I was going into the exam with and they recalculated my marks and it appeared that I did qualify for a re-test on one part and the Thursday that followed the NSCE weekend I received the rank of Sergeant and the following Saturday ...Expand for more
I had my re-test. The next Thursday I found out the news that I also had conquered the NSCE qualification, therefore, for the first time in many years that 1838 RCACC had a 100% pass on the NSCE test. The year of 2003 I would personally say, I believe that would be my most successful year in all of my cadet career. The following summer I attended the Rocky Mountain National Army Cadet Summer Training Centre (RMNACSTC) and completed it. At this cadet camp we had 6 weeks of 6 different training activities. Hiking, biking, glacier climbing, rock climbing, canoeing/kayaking and a week of leadership training. When I returned to 1838 in the fall, I received the rank of Master Warrant Officer (MWO) and appointed the new Regimental Sergeant Major (RSM). I would go on to hold the RSM position until June of 2006. The summer of 2004, I was a Warrant Officer (WO) for Alpha Company 3 platoon Drill & Ceremonial. When June 2006 came around, I was promoted to Chief Warrant Officer (CWO) and the final parade I participated in was the "Change of Command" parade, where my former CO, Major (Maj.) Paul Savoie, handed down the CO position to his Deputy Commanding Officer (DCO) at the time, Captain (CPT) Chris Lee. Before Maj. P. Savoie handed over the CO position, he made 2 final last acts as the CO and he promoted MWO Jennifer Klimchuk to CWO and after that I handed the RSM's Pace Stick over to her as she took over the parade as I marched off for the final time. You know, you take participation in something that you enjoy for so many years and you sort of take it for granted at times and when it all has to come to an end, you realize how much you're going to miss it. I was an Army Cadet for 7 years, it's already been over a month and I miss cadets a lot. When the fall comes around, I'm going back to 1838 and going to fall into the cadet corps as a Civilian Instructor (CI) and move up through the officer ranks.
