Steve's Story
Steve's schools include Handley High School. I graduated from the University of Richmond with a BA in biology followed closely by joining Navy OCS and then spending about four years on active duty working in a classified anti-submarine warfare unit. I was stationed in the Turks and Caicos Islands, Norfolk Atlantic Fleet Headquarters and Keflavik, Iceland and worked with folks in North Norway. I then spent a couple years civil service back in Norfolk working for the same command. I left there for Martin Marietta Aerospace Division in Denver. I worked there for about three years as a senior engineer and also took on a parttime job as a small business consultant. I met and married my wife Deb there. we have been married for 38 years and two sons, one of whom is married. We moved back to the Winchester area in the late 70's and split our time between Winchester and our farm near Ridgeway, Wv. nancial Planner in the early 80's. I have sold my consulting/tax practice, but still do planning and asset management for my investment clients. Deb is a licensed, clinical psychologists. I became very active in local organizations including President of the Chamber of Commerce, Preservation of Historic Winchester, the Kurtz Cultural Center. Deb and I formed The Opequon Watershed, Inc. as a non-profit concerned with the health and recreational potential for the Opequon. Finally, I spent eight years on Winchester City Council. I have cut back on work to four days a week and I enjoy gardening (flower and veggies) as well as hiking, fishing, some minor farming and just hanging out at the farm. I serve on the board of the Friends of the State Arboretum at Blandy; Handley's Career and Technical Education advisory council and hope to one day see the completion of the City's Green Circle linear trail system around town which we began back in the late 90's.
