John's Story

The "Story Wizard" recommends I ask how I hope you remember me.as a starting point. I hope that it's not in my white cheerlearder uniform after I fell in a mud puddle at Chandler! Nor my blackface routine in the SR play where the best joke was "Hark! I hear footprints!" I didn,t play as much basketball as the rest of you did. But I loved touch football (especially when we played St. John's Catholic School at the Zion Church Parking Lot.) I still don"t understand how they beat us every game with such a much smaller school. I think the key was J. B. Tisserand! My real pleasure was roaming the woods, fields and especially the river bank up near Cypress Creek. A quick dip also helped my attitude.I loved the Cottonwood Trees with their thick \bark which we used to peel off and carve into solid model airplanes. "Swimming" at the docks used to be fun. I still remember Johnny Stacer bringing in a Catfish which was longer than Johnny was tall, Then it was exciting to see a thunderstorm coming up the river from the West. And of course the dam, the locks, the wickets and the Bear Traps! I still say that I lived in the best litttl...Expand for more
e town in the world by a dam site! (Dam 47) Of course, I remember hamburgers and cokes at Johnnie's Place. I also remember his yellow headed niece who used to visit him from KY from time to time.I especially enjoyed it when she visited her cousin next door -- Donna Jean. Living on the city limit in the apple orchard, I had both City Friends -- The Breedens, The Carrols, Gene Wilson, Max Miller, Charles Innskeep, The Augspurgers -- where we frequently played penny ante poker with the family. Then there were country friends --Charles Esche, Herman Jones, Morris Embree, Herman was very important because I was in LUV with beautiful Dorothy Jones (and I still am!) "Jimmies was especially important with the Juke Box and the Dance Floor.I was always too young and too bashful to dance. But there were several girls I took a fancy to from time to time. But I wasn't about to take one of them to the Princess Theater (I was too young to have a driver's license) Beside that, I didnt play on the basketball team. they got all the girls the boys from Boonville didn't get.
