John's Story

Story Ideas: Weirdest Job: Dissecting Black Bears for the Dept. of Wildlife. Summer job. Where lived: Montreal - 1 st. for one year, Ottawa - 2 nd. - for 5 years. back to the rock for one year (1993-1994) and now Toronto 18+ years. relocated for jobs. Relax: Go to Gym, Spend time with the family on weekends - take Girl's to amusement parks - DisneyWorld (4-parks)/Universal Studios & Adventure Island, the Keys in Florida - Christmas time: DisneyLand & LegoLand - California one Summer - also Storyland, Santa's Village, Clarks Trading Post, Wales Tale Waterpark.....in New Hampshire - Girl's growing out of those parks now; Idlewild in Pennsylvania; Darian Lake in New York and now to visit National Museum of Play & Science Centers, Rochester NY, Pittsburgh, PA etc. Girl's love long weekends and we as a family like to go across to the US for extra long weekend trips - make 4 day weekends trips - always include activities for kids, they look FWD. to going to US and always have fun. I look up Kids Parks on the internet and go to Kids Parks in a reasonable driving distance, making it a mini vacation, also take kids to Science Centers in different city's in a reasonable drive - (Buffalo, Rochester - NY, Pittsburgh, PA, Cleveland, Ohio, (fly Seattle, Vancouver) etc.). Now with the dollar close to par turned into a shopping trip too. Now Winter is here - spend time teaching the Girls' to ski, they are doing good and are asking to go to bigger hills, rather than the two in Toronto. I started end of 2013 - took them twice to a local tow rope, Earl Bales, and rented equipment. As they liked it so much I bought them their own equipment in 2014 and took them 6 times skiing. This year I promised bigger and more challenging hills. Might even take them to Vermont for March Break. Parenting: Kids are fun and help one stay young. Enjoy kids while they are young. Time consuming but I am not complaining. Work: I work in the Engineering industry - most of my career has been contracting my services out - only worked staff say 9 1/2 years total during my working life till now. Though I now have a staff job for the last four year - economy still not really booming - but I keep hanging in. Contracts ar...Expand for more
e harder to come by. That's alright though it is good to have some stability with a family. Nice to have paid holidays/vacations too. Can spend more time with the family. On contract I would take extra long weekends only and Christmas week off. Now take the extended weekends and go for a couple two week long vacations - one summer and one at Christmas - Disney mostly Christmas Time Girls love it there. Dress: Still in jeans & jean shirts. Refuse to wear a shirt and tie to work, even if dress code dictates, told a boss once if they don't like it I can/will leave. I stayed on contract there for 4 1/2 years, no problem. They let it go and it became accepted in the Engineering Dept. for the others to do so too. Do things differently: Would have studied harder in University, not just party all the time and pick a better career - construction/engineering always up and down. Goes in cycles - holding steady for now (Mining industry is down now - so cross my fingers that it will pick up) though I have survived, weaker ones get weeded out - at these times. Future: In 10 years I hope to be semi retired. Work part time in Engineering (6-8 months a year). Spend time with family & south traveling. Child hood memory: Putting a DEAD Bumble Bee in the neighbors bikini bottom and watching her run home screaming Mommy Mommy. She did not know it was dead. My cousin laughed so hard he could not talk to say what he was laughing at. I was known as a little instigator when I was young, always getting my friend into trouble, his mother would ground him and I would go up in the woods behind my house and kind of hide out till dinner, then go home and say I never heard myself being called home. It worked! My friend, on the other hand, would go home, I would run before the call come out - get out of ear shot. He told me he didn't like that seeing/knowing I was out playing when he was in grounded, and for my actions. I told him get out of the area and let your parents cool off before facing them. He said that would make his mother madder and he would be in worse trouble. His decision! Aren't Kids are fun! Now: Live in Toronto with the family, taking life as it comes. Ups and Downs. Good years & bad years.
