John's Story

Notice: Some of what I share is not significant but I tell them to hopefully make you smile or laugh or shake your head and wonder if they know I have escaped again and gone off my medication. Education: After high school I went to GMI and obtained my BSME. A major miracle. Many years later I went back and earned an MBA. Work: I stayed at Delphi until the bitter end. I was retired for a year when I received a call and had an opportunity to work for a company that had plants in North Carolina and CT, I became very familiar with flying between those two states New England truly is beautiful in the Fall. I had an opportunity to do a short stint for a pharmaceutical company at their facility in England. After a few years I returned to Ohio and tried to enjoy retirement. However. I did go back to Woodman Dr. to help with a quality problem. I agreed to two months but it stretched into 2 years. Now that I am 70 I think I am done. Family: Happy to say I have 3 great daughters. For those of you who knew both my brother and I you understand how much better off the world is that Jimmy and I both had all daughters I now have 6 grand sons and 4 grand daughters. This year 2023 the oldest will be 23 (where did time go?) and the youngest 10 ( a little girl from China that my youngest daughter and her family adopted.) Fire Dept: When I moved to Beavercreek back in 1974 a friend from work asked me to consider joining the volunteer fire dept. I did and I am thankful to have had the opportunity to contribute to where I lived. I did learn that being in a burning building is not like on TV (You can't see squat lol). I also became a paramedic and enjoyed that. But that was many years ago, so don't become ill around me. :) Hobbies: I enjoyed playing sports (wish I had had one more year Mr. Mullins, I actually was pretty good my first two years at college) But after six knee operations I decided maybe the surgeons knew more than I gave them credit for. From there I began fishing, primarily in Canada as it is so beautiful there in the Fall. My latest hobbies are traveling, inching my way up mountains, and taking pictures. I have a goal to visit all 50 of our glorious states and with the job I had in NC and CT, I now have been to all the 49 contiguous states. All I have left is Hawaii (and plan to visit some year before I get old(er). I also have a dream to visit every continent and have been to four of the seven. I have friends willing to go to Africa and South America, but there is still room for a guest to Antarctica. :) In July 07 I went to Australia and New Zealand and spent 3 days snorkeling on the Great Barrier Reef. Oh, I had a seizure on the airplane but that is a story for another day. On skipping up mountains: -In Aug. 2006 I made it to the top of Black Butte Mountain near Bend, Oregon. -In Aug 07 got to 9800 feet on the South Sister in Oregon; just 500 feet from the summit when thankfully a storm moved in and gave me a "valid" excuse to retreat. -In Oct 09 I climbed Mt. Washington in New Hampshire and two weeks later climbed Bear Mountain in Conn. In Sept 2018 I had an opportunity to go to Israel for 9 days. It was an amazing time., I saw places and things that you read about in the Bible, and now I can say, "I've been there and I saw that." The brochure said, "Walk where Jesus walked" and I thought it was probably a generalization, but we actually walked down roads and trails that He did walk down.. It gave me goosebumps and still will at times. I will be adding pictures but not all 576 of them. :-) Why the impact, you may ask? Well, many years ago I realized I was a sinner (that is no surprise to some of you that know me well). I also knew that there was a punishment for my sins and that Jesus died for me and took my punishment on His cross. All I had to do was repent of my sins and ask Him to be my Savior as I know He died on a cross (and I saw where), was buried (I saw where) and was raised again (and some day I will see Him). For those of you whose path I have crossed and never shared what I believe, I beg your forgiveness. I am grateful for all those who have been a part of my life.+ 50 years ago there was a Friday, Nov. 13th. 2020 Update The younger grandson in Oregon plays basketball for his high school team. His team won the high school championship for their division (based upon school size). I got to fly out there and watch. He got 19 in the semifinal game and 9 in the championship game. He got his athletic ability from Dad and his grandpa . :-) 2021 Update I was invaded by Covid this January and became very sick. My family tells me I was dying.as I don’t remember anything after February 1. Hopefully none of you will get it but if so; may I suggest looking at a website FLCCC. Net? In fact, those that want to be proactive this website will provide things you can take to help prevent it or help minimize the impact. On some happier notes., my oldest grandson in Oregon is now a cadet 4th class ( ie a Freshman) at the Air Force academy in Colorado Springs. Younger Oregon grandson's HS team made it to the state final’s again. They lost by 1 point in double overtime. He scored 21 points and was the only unanimous player for the all-state tournament and player of the year in his region. He was 6 for 6 at the free throw line in the two overtimes. I told him I would have been so nervous I would not have even hit the bankboard. (Donnie, Paul, Tilman and Bobby - I know you guys are thinking it would have been a miracle if I hit the bankboard even if we were up 20 points) I helped him work on his game -lol My youngest grand daughter in Oregon w...Expand for more
rote an essay on what the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier means to our country and also what it means to her personally. Based upon that she was selected to be one of four people to place a wreath on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. She is the kind of person that brightens the day of those she meets but the picture of her on that occasion shows how seriously she took the ceremony. 2022 Update = My 4 oldest grandchildren are in college now. How did I get so old? = Health wise the wheels continue to fall off. :-( Over my life I have had 6 knee operations and have another scheduled for Feb 6 to replace my right knee. Hopefully that will be the last. Sadly, I will not be able to participate in the Senior Olympics again. This past January I had surgery on my cervical spine, so I now have another foreign body in my body. The surgery was not too painful but I was a cone head for 3 months and that was a pain in the neck. In September I forgot a bunch of stuff and became really sad and had a sense of foreboding. So they ran all kinds of tests to see if it was my brain ( I know, some of you are saying they didn't need to run tests to see if my brain was defective; that you could have told them the answer to that) or my heart affecting my brain. They found some stuff wrong with both. I got to visit my grandson at the Air Force Academy. It is a very impressive place. And they beat Navy in the football game I got to attend. While there I got to see the "Garden of the Gods". Amazing rock formations. Will have to post some pictures. 2023 Update = Went to Oregon in Jan. as my oldest grand daughter out there, she is in a theater group, had the role of Elsa from the picture "Frozen". She played the role of Annie in the musical in 2021. = Had Covid again in January, not near as bad this time, but had to cancel my right knee replacement because of it. = Made it to Alaska in Sept, It truly is as beautiful as they say. (posted some pictures) We did not get to see Mt. Denali due to cloud cover but saw many other beautiful mountains. Did not see any bears but did walk a trail in Denali National Park where you passed close to some blue berries plants. There was a sign that said, "Bears in this area; make loud noises". I thought screaming in terror might qualify. No, I did not scream that, some of you know how brave ( okay stupid ) I am. I was hollering, "Here bear, I have some treats in my wife's purse for you." <--- I think I have a sense of humor, she did not. For all of us Beavers, I saw two beaver dams and downed trees showing their handiwork. = Health wise I had another episode where my brain malfunctioned (ok, ok, I know some of you say my brain has been malfunctioning ever since Jim Mowery knocked me off my bike). So back to the hospital and all kinds of tests. One doctor came in and told me that. they thought it was TIA's that I was having. He asked me if I knew what a "TIA' was; well, from my paramedic training I knew. But I looked at him and said, "Temporarily Insane Again", He did not think that was funny. I thought it was. Oh well. Then my Neurologist told me if they didn't find anything this time he would have to remove my brain to examine it more closely. I asked him if I would get a "loaner", he said he didn't think that would be necessary, that I probably wouldn't notice a difference. He and I have a lot of fun teasing each other. I only have one surgery planned this year. My trip to Australia July 2007 I was on the plane heading to Brisbane, Australia and the lady sitting next to me shared this part of the trip. She said we were talking and all of a sudden I stood up and started howling. I asked her if it was loud and she said, "Oh yeah, it was loud" then she said I had a grand mal seizure. There were two doctors on the plane and they knocked me out. The pilots had debated whether to divert the flight or not but apparently the decision was to continue on. As I started to wake up, I felt someone patting the top of my head. When I opened my eyes there was a face right in front of mine. They asked me if I knew my name and I said yes, after a few awkward seconds they asked me what my name was ( If they had asked me my name the first time instead of asking me if I knew it, we could have avoided those awkward seconds). So after I told them my name they asked if I knew where I was and I told them. Then they asked if I knew where I was going and I told them. Then they asked if I knew who the President was and I told them Pres. Bush, they asked who the President before him and I told them Pres, Clinton, they then asked who was President before him and I said Pres. Lincoln. They decided I was okay, just a little nuts). When the plane landed they waited until all the passengers had left the plane and some guy came onboard. He told me I had to go to the hospital. When I told him I wouldn't go he said I either went or I would not get on another Qantas airplane. So I went to the hospital.. :-) 2024 This year has started off with a bang - a real bang. My wife said about 2:00 am on 17Dec2024 she heard a loud bang (said it sounded a sonic boom, not sure how many of them she has heard) Anyway she went to see what caused the noise and said I was crawling down the hallway. Long story short I gave myself a concussion. From around mid-Oct until early Jan I have no memory of that time period, so a pre-op visit with my surgeon, Thanksgiving, bought a new car, had surgery, Christmas and 2024 New Year do not exist for me. Hope 2024 is a good year for all of us. Stay safe and smile. Thank you for some wonderful memories. John
