JD's Story

I enlisted in the Navy at the end of my junior year – “see the world” they said – so I traded my final year of high school to visit such exotic places as Pakistan, Somalia and the tropical paradise of Diego Garcia…what the hell was I thinking. After my first tour of active duty, I attended FIT in Jensen Beach for commercial diver training and shortly thereafter re-enlisted in the reserves, serving thirteen years with the military. I studied mechanical engineering at UF and FSU on the lifetime installment plan while working as a diver/welder, hyperbaric technologist (CHT) at Shands Hospital in Gainesville and as an engineer intern with Navy’s Diving and Life Support Division in Panama City. This phase of life was known as “embracing the suck” – a term that years later my kids would become quite familiar with when complaining about homework. After finishing school (and having watched perhaps one too many episodes of Homer Simpson hitting the big red button), I made a career change to a much less hazardous way of making a living – working in the nuclear services field. So, I hung up my Superlite 17 (diving helmet), bought a really nice pocket prote...Expand for more
ctor and moved to the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia, where I’ve been employed as an engineer for the last 21+ years. My wife, Amy, of 25+ years and I have somehow managed to stay put long enough to make a home and raise three beautiful (and surprisingly well-adjusted) daughters...oh, and a 100# lab (named “GATOR”, of course). Our eldest daughter now with a family of her own and the youngest finishing high school just last year – in fact we just received notice from the judge that our youngest has just been accepted into a prestigious work-release program – just kidding of course. Two of the three followed mom into healthcare, studying/working as nurses and one is a biomedical engineer. So, there’s at least three more paying into the social security system that we’ll be depending on soon enough – and you can rest assured that those retirement benefits you worked so hard to accumulate will be there. When I’m not supporting an outage, working on my never-ending home remodel project, hunting whitetail, calling Turkey, or teaching SCUBA, I can be found on any given weekend spearfishing and/or diving the many wrecks off the NC coast.
