John's Story
I loved school so much that I carried a full load in my Senior year even though I only needed English credits to graduate. I was having lots of fun doing everything but study. Miss Murphy was so upset when final grades came out, because I was the first person out of the upper 1/3 of the class. Since the teachers mostly loved me, I would have been a shoo-in for the National Honors Society. I really wasn't studious, I was just a big help with everything in the school. I lost count of how many times I was called out of class to help with some problem (like movie projectors that wouldn't work) so things could continue to function. The world didn't revolve around me; I just knew how to fix things and where to find things that no one else seemed to be able to find. I really went to school for Chorus, Band, Clubs, Polaris photographer, acting in the plays, Library assistant and running the lights in the auditorium (& of course to meet girls). I really never studied because I knew I could pull passing grades without any real work. So I settled for top honors in the National Thespian Society.
Now college was a totally different story. First of all, I put college on the back burner to find myself. The best thing I did was work for PMD for a summer. I gained a lot of respect for those who could wo...Expand for more
rk a lifetime of 'production' with only a small hope of ever graduating to 'The Tool Room'. I really had saved no money for college so I had to work a fulltime job all through school. I went to school at USF majoring in Nursing while I worked at St.Petersburg's (then) Mound Park Hospital as an orderly in the Recovery Room (called the PCU now).
After college, I moved back to Pontiac and worked in the ER where I occasionally saw people I went to school with.
I rode my motorcycle when I moved to NY because I saw something different in people from home who moved East and came back to visit. It was a natural for me also because it is the Theatre Capital of the World. I seriously thought of persuing an acting career, though that never worked out.
I met my wonderful wife (also an RN) in NY and we moved to Cherry Hill, NJ and raised 2 children until they were in school and we moved to PA Dutch Country.
We put 2 kids through college, one at Villanove and one at Drexel. We retired 2 years ago and have been working a small collectibles and antiques business that started out as a hobby when I was about 40. We have been graced with 3 beautiful grandchildren with a 4th on the way as I write this. As they say, the rest is history.
