John's Story

Life after High School - After leaving Brick Twp High School in 1963, I attended and graduated from Adm. Farragut Academy, near Toms River. From there, I went to Stevens Institute of Technology, where I received a Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering. In June 1969, riight after graduation, I was married for the first time, learned to scuba dive, and entered the Air Force as a 2d Lt. In 1971, received a Master's Degree in Aeronautical & Astronautical Guidance & Control from the Air Force Institute of Technology. While in the Air Force, I worked in R&D flight simulation, which has been my career ever since. After leaving the Air Force, I worked for Systems Control for 5 years, first in California, where I was living in a travel trailer on 38 acres of rural land in the Santa Cruz mountains; and later in southern Maryland, where I lived aboard a Nor'Sea 27 sailboat. Then I returned to California, and worked for a NASA contractor at Ames Research Center for 20 years. I am now married for the third time. I have one son from the first marriage, and I don't like to talk about my second marriage. ...Expand for more
My latest wife is from Chile, South America. Those who remember me from Spanish class in high school may remember that I was quite fluent, and those who knew me at the American School in Monterrey, Mexico, will know why! Silvia and I met in California, but we were married in Chile in 1991. At the time, I was living in Half Moon Bay, near San Francisco, on an old 42' two-masted wooden schooner, and Silvia moved aboard. Later, we moved ashore, and lived in various houses in the Bay Area. One year, we even lived in an RV. In 2005, we moved to the Hampton Roads area of southern Virginia, where we live in a large house on 6 acres on the Pagan River. I worked for another 11 years developing flight simulation software on a contract with NASA Langley. I started scuba diving again in 2009 after a few years out of water, and have dived on many of the shipwrecks off the North Carolina coast, including two German U-boats sunk in WWII. Silvia and I own a property at the beach in Chile, with cabanas for rent, and we hope to retire there in 2017. So, as you can see, my life has been pretty much normal. hehehe
