John's Story
Life
I took early retirement from Texas Instruments in 1998. I've abandoned SCUBA diving and flying airplanes for hobbies such as photography, computers, and gardening; pastimes such as movies, reading, writing, tennis, and jogging; and volunteer work, including serving as webmaster for TI's retiree alumni site, tialumni.org, and Kimball's alumni site, justinfkimball.org.
I've taught digital photography and Photoshop classes part-time at the local community college, ccccd.edu/ce, and recently accepted a full-time position as Continuing Education Program Director for Computers and Technology.
My 36-year career at TI began as a sophomore co-op student from UT Arlington. Upon completing my BSEE in 1967, I joined TI's Apparatus Division. My first project assignment was terrain-following computer lead engineer for the Vought A-7 attack aircraft airborne radar system, used in Viet Nam. nd during the war. That was an eye-opening experience!
My last 10 years at TI, I served as Business and Strategic Services internal consultant for TI world-wide process reengineering and strategic decision analysis. As a side job, I led the development team for an internal web site depicting the history of TI innovation. Our effort won us a place in the Smithsonian information technology permanent exhibit.
In addition to the terrific experience of working with many talented people during my career at TI, I had the opportunity to complete a MSEE degree at SMU and a MS Management Science degree at UTD, as well as decision analysis courses at Stanford University.
I have five children: three from my first marriage, one from my present marriage, and a step-daughter. My oldest lives in the DFW metro area. She has given me two gorgeous grandchildren. My youngest child is a freshman at SMU, majoring in Electrical Engineering.
