John's Story

Dr. Chattoe was born in Toronto and attended Withrow and Riverdale Collegiate schools in east end Toronto. He was a Royal Canadian Sea Cadet for six years at RCSCC Haida and one year at RCSCC Vanguard and later in Ottawa a Sea Cadet officer. He received his BASC and MASC degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering 1970 and his Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering (human computer Interaction) in 2008 all from the University of Toronto. From 2004 to 2014 Dr. Chattoe taught in the undergraduate CCIT program at the University of Toronto, Mississauga, where he developed 3rd/4th year courses in Human/ Computer Interaction, Virtual/Augmented Reality Applications and Technology Entrepreneurship/ Innovation. Dr. Chattoe is a member of the Association of Professional Engineers of Ontario. He has completed a 3-year term on the Board of Directors of Develcon Corporation leading up to its acquisition. From 1998 to 2012 Dr. Chattoe was President and CEO of HUCEN Technologies Inc, a human Factors research company and a management consultancy. Consulting clients in the US, UK and Canada included Madge Networks, Inter Digital Networks, BCS Global Networks, in communications products and services, Immersion Studios Inc. and Mobovivo Inc. in the media / mobile content space and Navaho Networks and Cryptolex Trust Systems in the on-line e-commerce transactions space. The research division works with a multi-disciplinary team of researchers at the Knowledge Media Design Institute at the University of Toronto. The research division conducts research on human technology interface design working with researchers at the Interactive Media Lab, University of Toronto. Based on research started at Defense Research Development Canada he received a PhD in 2008 from the University of Toronto. John was President and CEO of the Information Technology Research Centre, ITRC, from October 1992 to December 1997. nvestigating human interaction issues in advanced application concepts in video based collaboration. The Centre collaborates with over 200 Ontario IT companies exchanging ideas, people, and technologies including Alias Wavefront in advanced multi-media design tools and IBM in software and in security technologies. Joint research programs were established in Europe and Asia. During this period John provided management guidance to four startups originating from the research program including Platform Computing Inc. Dr. Chattoe joined Bell-Northern Research (BNR) in 1977 as Technical Assistant to the President, following 7 years with Computing Devices Co., now a subsidiary of General Dynamics. At Computing Devices he performed signal processing analysis, computer systems engineering, major program management (US Army Abrahams tank fire control system development), and general management assignments in both military and industrial applications. In 1978, he was appointed Director of Network Product Development at BNR, and was responsible for a 200 person Sl-1 PBX, Sl-10/DPN data-network products and fiber optics R&D team. In 1980 he program managed the deployment of DPN technology into the German DATEX-P network. From 1980 to 1984, he started up and managed a pioneering packet-switching data networking division at Northern Telecom. Over four years the business grew to $ 50M in sales in Europe and North America and has since grown to over $750 M prior to Nortel Network’s acquisition of Bay Networks From 1985 to 1992, Dr. Chattoe held a range of increasingly senior management positions at Northern Telecom including Assistant Vice-President, Strategic Product Line Integration; Assistant Vice-President, ISDN Introduction (He program managed the development and deployment of ISDN on the DMS-100 central office switch throughout North America) and Assistant Vice-President, Switching Product Sales and Marketing Services (while leading switching sales and marketing from 1987 to 1990, he led the growth of order input from $ 600M a year to over $1B annually). In 1991 he was appointed an Officer of the company as Vice-President, Marketing and Vice-President, New Business Development.
