John's Story
I started out in Seattle, going to Hazel Valley Elementary. Had I stayed, I would have gone to Evergreen High along with most of my classmates. But we moved to Dallas, Texas in 1964. I went to Browne Jr. High in Dallas, Texas for 7th through 9th grades. I was pretty quiet and shy back then so maybe a lot of people don't remember me, I guess because I didn't make an impression on them. After Browne, I was going to go to Kimball for 10th grade, but it got changed. I went to Carter High School for my 10th grade and half of 11th grade, then transferred to Sunset High. I was there for just the last half of my Junior year (Basically spring of 1972) but I have to say that I made a lot of friends there, and finally started playing guitar in a group. I wonder if any of them remember me, since I was there so briefly, but I do remember them. I still remember my friends and acquaintances from all of my other schools very well too and wonder what they have done in life.
When my parents announced that we were moving to Portland, Oregon, I was very upset. I was finally at a school where I fit in, and I had all my friends that I was about to lose. But in the end, I had to go, and Dallas would never be the same when I came back several years later. I was happy to find out that my name ended up in the 1973 Sunset Sundial anyway, as a "camera-shy Senior." At least it showed that I had been there. (Thanks, Lisa Hammontree-Farr!)
Even though I wished I could have stayed in Dallas, if I had done so I would have missed out on life in Oregon, which was an interesting change. Oregon is a very beautiful place. We moved to Aloha, a western suburb of Portland, in June of 1972. The feel and attitude of Portland seemed a lot more laid back....Expand for more
I started going to Hillsboro High in the nearby town of Hillsboro, but after a few weeks I switched to Aloha High which was only about 10 blocks from my house .I was at Aloha High for my senior year in 1972-1973. The classes I remember the most were Mass Media and Judy Conley's Art class. I also remember working in the media center, making duplicates of reel-to-reel tapes for them. Mostly I remember being outside in little groups smoking and chatting on the south side of the building, sometimes going over the fence into the orchard for spontaneous parties.
Eventually around March 1973 I took the GED test and passed, so I didn't see any point in staying in school.
So I spent the spring riding my motorcycle and playing guitar in various rock bands that were trying to get off the ground. I finally got in a band and we were getting some gigs and then fall rolled around and my mom said if I didn't go to college now, I never would. So it was rock band or college. I decided to go to college. I went to PCC and got a degree in Electronics Engineering, which has stood me quite well to this day.
From 1974 to 1977 I worked as a repair tech at Rebel's Car Stereo in Beaverton, remember them? They are long gone now.
I left Aloha in 1977 and moved back to Texas, where I stayed for 20 years. I had a nice career with Tandy-Radio Shack in Fort Worth for about 18 years. Then that career ended rather suddenly in 1996 and I worked for various internet providers doing tech support and network admin stuff. In 2000 I managed to get a nice job at Purdue University in Indiana, which is where I've been from 2000 to the present day. So that's a capsule history of my time at Browne, Kimball, Carter, Sunset, Hilhi, Aloha, and to the present.
