I don't know what the rest of you thought I was like, but I must have been a nerd. I occasionally skipped lunch so I go to the library and read Scientific American. After school I would spend some time with the chess club. I loved the regimentation in ROTC but hated the macho aggressiveness in gym. I loved watching the RAMS win in football and basketball, especially when I could play in the pep band. Mr. Ross taught me to love classical music. One night I rode my bike several miles just so I could hear him lead a ladies choir. It was an evening in heaven. What a wild party on graduation night! A few friends and I drove around a little bit, ate Big Boys, went bowling, and returned before we were too tired. I had sworn into the Utah National Guard as a Russian linguist/interrogator a few hours before graduation and started basic training that August. By May I finished that training and left for Sweden on an LDS mission. During my years at the U of U I got my degree in Russian as a teacher (I coveted Mr. Collett's job), as well as an ROTC commission in the Army. During the summers I had worked at Camp Evergreen in the Uintas, where I met the cook, Rebecca, and married her. I tried 2 years on active duty as an officer in the Corp of Engineers (Fort Belvoir, VA, and Fort Leonard Wood, MO), but thought I would like teaching better.
