John's Story

Life I attended the University of Iowa for my Bachelor of Music and my Masters Degrees. Highlights included touring Europe and Russia on a cultural exchange tour as well as tours in the US. My wife is a musician as well, we were married on April 13th in Davenport IA. On our honeymoon I took an audition for the Marine Band (the band that provides music for the White House) and got the position. My first teaching job was a one year appointment in Saskatoon, Sask. Canada. I was a replacement for a faculty member finishing his Doctorate. I ended up spending two years there when he found he needed another year to finish. In '74 we moved back to Virginia, this time...Expand for more
to the Shenandoah Valley. We were both fortunate to find positions in the School of Music at James Madison University. I had started my Doctoral program at Catholic University in Washington, DC and finished it in'76. This was an excellent career for both of us and we stayed into retirement from JMU. We are doing considerable travel when we can get away, we share a love of working with dogs, primarily Jack Russell Terriers. I am an avid golfer and my wife has horses and is a member of one of the Virginia foxhunting clubs. My Dad talked about how busy in retirement, saying he did not know how he had time to work. I second that, I recommend retirement for anyone!!
