John's Story
After Allentown, I graduated from PJC and then the University of Florida with a degree in civil engineering (roads, bridges, utilities, etc.). I returned to West Florida to work for 2 yrs. before moving to Tallahassee where we lived and worked for 31 yrs. We then moved to Jacksonville for 9+ yrs. before retiring. After 6 short months I flunked retirement, and we moved to Denton, TX (just north of Dallas/Fort Worth) to work for 4 more yrs. This time retirement stuck. We moved from Texas to Woodland Park, CO, (25 mi. NW of Colorado Springs and about 12 mi. North of Pikes Peak), so Ann could attend Charis Bible College (a long time goal of hers). She just graduated in May 2020. Along the way, I spent 33 yrs. in the Florida National Guard, which took me to more hurricanes than I can remember and a number of places in the U.S. and overseas. great friends and opportunities, taken us to see the world, and enabled us to retire to see even more. We invite “old” Allentown friends and classmates to visit and stay with us in Colorado.
Since graduating Allentown, I have never regretted attending the small school; never have I ever felt I was “short-changed” by Allentown’s small size and rural location. To the contrary, I have always felt fortunate to have attended a small school where I could get to know all of my classmates and many others at the school. I have fond memories of my Allentown friends, classmates, Wildcat teammates, teachers, coaches, principals, and even my bus drivers, cafeteria ladies, and custodians. At the time, I thought our Senior Class motto was a bit corny, but through life, it has always proven to be so true — “When you’re through learning, you’re through.” GO WILDCATS! Always a special place in my memories and heart.
