I joined the Air Force in May, 1961. I ended up at Malmstrom AFB when the Mace-B tactical nuclear missile was phased out when our Mace-B Guidance System Mechanic/Ground Equipment Maintenance Set class at Lowry AFB was almost ready to graduate. We were forced to choose another missile, and I chose the brand-new Minuteman and they sent me to Great Falls, MT. After completing an accelerated course on the Minuteman, I became a Ballistic Missile Analyst Specialist. While at Malmstrom I was on Missile Maintenance Teams led by Sgt. Ray Cook, and Sgt. Earl Wicker. There was another team chief in between, but his name slips my mind. I was usually known as "Dave" at Malmstrom, because of habit of constructing nicknames from our last names, and as "J.F." on my MMT since the alternately spelled "Jon" was already taken by a senior teammate, SSGT Jon Lindren.
