John's Story

Life: Started out life in Los Angeles and then we moved to Palm Springs California, Still remember riding my metal flake green Scwinn Sting Ray and hanging out with Keith and Kelly Green. Then we moved to the high desert in California and I remember getting in trouble for riding my bike back to Palm Springs. Then we moved to Arizona, I was so unhappy to have to leave my friends in California. It seems like I spent most of my life moving. I attended almost a dozen schools before high school and had developed trust issues. I guess it just took me time to learn who I was and what I wanted out of life. After I graduated from High School, myself and Rick Means joined the Air Force together. Rick went to Germany and then Nellis Air Force Base in Las Vegas. He then got out of the Air Force and worked at LAX. Sadly he left all of us too soon. Not a day goes by that I don't think of Rick and miss him. As a memorial to Rick I continued forward in the Air Force. I received many awards, accomendations, and medals as I traveled all over the world. I had the honor to particiapate in Operation Desert Shield, Operation Desert Storm, Operation Provide Comfort, and Operation Desert Focus. I retired from the Air Force after nearly 22 years. Moved to Anchorage Alaska in 1997 with the Air Force and just love it up here. During this time I started to let go the anger and focus on being a better person. I guess the cool crisp air and white purifying snow started me on my journey. Alaska has helped me in so many ways and I'm so much better for my time here. The mountains, the rivers, and the wild life are truly breath taking. It's really special when the moose come into the back yard of our house. Sometimes I take for granted how amazing it is in Alaska. Then I look over the horizon and think this could be a postcard. People travel up here from all over the world to experience the fishing, sights, and the wild life .Taking our boat out of Seward Alaska is just amazing. It's really cool to see the whales, puffins, and bears. We also like to get out on the lakes and knee board with the family. Nothing quite like a quiet lake, fly rod, and a float tube to relax your soul. My first job out of the Air Force was with Johnson Controls in Anchorage Alaska. I first worked at the hospital at Elmendorf AFB. It was a really good transition for me...Expand for more
because I still worked on the Air Force base as a civilian. I was on a mission to make everything work right. It was really satisfying to have the Hospital Commander write a letter commending all my hard work. After a few years I transfered to the main branch and traveled all over the State of Alaska, even as far north as Barrow Alaska. Nothing in the world like flying in a Piper Cub and landing on packed snow and then taking a snowmobile to a site. We had an amazing team at Johnson Controls with most of the people going on to become very successful. It gave me the opportunity to prove to myself, what I was able to accomplish with hard work and determination. After a few more years I decided to stay home with my family. I went to work as the Lead Engineer for a property management company at Alaska Regional Hospital. It was a great job and we had awesome tenants in our buildings. Now I work as the Director for Physical Plant at The Alaska Center for Performing Arts. I'm in charge of the maintenance, security, and janitorial sections. Then again if your in charge then you work for everyone. I have amazing people working for me and we've accomplished so much. It's also really cool to see all the shows like Fiddler on the Roof, Nutcracker, Beauty and the Beast etc... I'm married to an incredible woman (soulmate) and we have 4 girls and 4 boys. My wife is my best friend and we love spending time together. We also have four wonderful grand children. I play a lot of basketball and take advantage of all the really incredible sport fishing Alaska has to offer. We also like to take the kids over to our club house to swim at least a few times a week. Family has become my driving force and my world revolves around the special people in my life. I'm a big Los Angeles Lakers fan and watch as many games as I can. It just hurt when the Dallas Mavericks swept the Lakers out of the playoffs. Of course it was amazing when the Lakers went to the finals 3 times in a row and winning 2 championships.Of course when Kobe got hurt it brought tears to my eyes. Although during my lifetime the Lakers have won 15 championships. I also love tuner cars, America's Got Talent, and Hot Import Nights. Recently I've switched to America's Got Talent because of the variety. I'm also a Marvel fan and love how many different shows are on that reflect my interests.

Something to think about.
So glad we went to the Alaska State Fair on Saturday. Although it looked like it was going to rain any minute. Somehow we stayed dry.
