John's Story
Life
Went to St. Andrew's from 8th-11th grade. They never told me for sure, but I think Fr. Martin encouraged my parents to let me do the public school thing in Alabama my senior year. Graduated from Walker High in Jasper, AL in 1979 and did two years of parties at Birmingham-Southern before a 7-year hiatus from educational pursuits.
Spent about 5 of those years as an Episcopal missionary in Honduras, teaching in a bilingual school, then running the youth ministry in the Diocese of Honduras, before opening a girls' orphanage there.
Married the lovely and gracious Iris Orellana in 1985, and adopted two young'uns, Danny and Dilcia, who are now 33, and 30 years old, respectively. Iris has tolerated me all these years and the kids have given me six fabulous grandkids.
Came back to the U.S. in 1988, did a year at Virginia Western Community College in Roanoke before transferring to James Madison University in Harrisonburg, VA. Graduated from JMU in 1991 with a degree in International Business.
Ran a homeless shelter for families with children in Harrisonburg from 1989-1995, and simultaneously worked as a Spanish Interpreter in the Virginia Courts and taught first- and second-year ...Expand for more
Spanish at James Madison University. In 1996, I went to work as the legislative assistant for Delegate Glenn Weatherholtz in the Virginia General Assembly. Did that for a decade, as well as sold Real Estate.
Delegate Weatherholtz was very generous to me with scheduling and other moral support, allowing me to attend law school at the George Mason University School of Law from 2001-2004. It was a heck of a long commute, 127 miles each way, nearly every day for three years. I managed to muddle through, and got my license to practice law in the Commonwealth of Virginia in April of 2005. In September '05, a law school classmate and I formed the partnership of Eldridge & Elledge PLC in Harrisonburg, Virginia. You can find us through a Google search.
In general terms, life is very good. We stay busy with work, family, church, volunteer work and politics. I just finished a stint as Chairman of the Harrisonburg Republican Committee, I'm currently serving on the Vestry of Emmanual Episcopal Church in Harrisonburg, I'm on the Boards of: Rockingham Memorial Hospital Foundation, Weekday Religious Education, and the Inter-American Health and Development Organization, based in Warrenton, Virginia.
