John's Story
Life
Going on 17 years abroad now, still with the Asturian Symphony. My 10 yr. old daughter has taken up the violin, piano, guitar and drums, but I still drive her crazy more than vice versa. My russian violinist wife has never heard of Siberian Peach Fuzz pie(!) In fact she hadn't seen a peach til she left Russia. Here still trying to get by without such commodities as bagels, english muffins, ricotta cheese, tomato paste, frozen raviolis. . .but there are loads of local delicacies that still ring exotic. If you're bored, google "John Falcone Bassoonist" to see my MySpace or search "JayBassoon" on YouTube to hear/see some of my goings-on the last couple of decades. Cheers! -JF
School
It was Mark Twain who said, "I believe I've received a fine education in spite of my schooling." I'm sure most of us can understand his reasoning as the Academic institutions of yore often have their all too many flaws. tc. Lately, 20 years hence, I've experienced something of a renaissance as I've put the finishing touches on two multi faceted kiddie pieces for Woodwind Quintet and Narrator: "The Invasion of the Fiufas" and "The Bassoonist of Hamelin." These recently formed part of a set of performances with Modern Dance threaded throughout. The kids all seemed to love it, especially my daughter, Katya who played, alternately, a Rat, a child and a Fiufa in the cast of many. Any old friends paying classmates for email info can request a copy of the DVD(free) though it's in Spanish. Would be great to hear from you. . .JF
College
Did 5 years at Carnegie-Mellon in Pittsburgh. Interrupted by a year in Costa Rica(1983). Was noted for stringing stuff up around the CMU campus(Lunch in Space, Towel in Space, etc.), practicing bassoon on the tennis courts, and sliding down dangerous banisters. Lived, however, to go on to Juilliard. May be the only person to have been kicked out of there AFTER graduating(?!). May have had something to do with a Rap I lamely performed in China on the Juilliard Orchestra tour. Found out the hard way that Eminem I ain't.
