John's Story
Dutchess Park kid....kind of defined you back then. Enlisted in USMC Winter of my senior year at RCK. I wanted the Navy where my uncle was a Lt Cmdr, or the Air Force like my Pop during WWII but the war made those branches of the service much harder to join. I joined Marines because I reckoned they had better combat training than the Army. Went in with a bunch of RCK guys, but I didn't know them very well and we were split up when we reached Parris Island.
Went to Nam. Got wounded. Hospitals. Rehab. USMC got me a into a federal agency. Marines guided and watched over me for a long career. They were like parents to me., and saved me from making the usual stupid mistakes in life.
Moved to rural North Carolina on retirement. Worked as a musician at coffee houses, bars, farmers markets, festivals and eventually full time at Ghost Town in the Sky where I performed Gospel, Cowboy...Expand for more
and Hillbilly music. Was also a carpenter, plumber, electrical and landscape helper. Carried a lot of stuff. Dug a lot of holes.
Got a little fisherman's house up in Newfoundland. Played music in Neddie's Pub in Cow Head. Beautiful country.
Live in Florida now, few minutes walk to an Atlantic Coast beach: Floridana Beach. Still playing music. 4th of July show just several days ago.
Married several times. I never strayed, but still failed at it. Never had kids.
Have a wonderful girlfriend now. She lives 3 miles from me....raising her grandson.
Graduated from Marist College and SUNY.
My little brother George (John Jay '79) lives up in Maine. He married Jeannie a neighbor from Dutchess Park.
The rest of my family have passed on, and none of us had any kids...
I don't remember many of you from Ketcham. I was in a Boys Home until middle of Junior year.
But my best to all.
John
