John's Story

After WCHS I went on to USAF, where I spent two tours in SEA (Thailand). When I returned to Illinois, I went to work as an Insurance Agent, for a company then moved on to be an Independent Agent. While working with my agency, I went back to school. After just a little over 18 years in the Insurance business, I sold my agency and switched to Computer Consulting full time in 1987. I've been in this field ever since, working as the CTO of a large Religious Organization, then IT Director at several other non-profits, and most recently as the IT Director for a Charter School District in Chicago, nearly 2000 students at four schools, three ES and one HS. I retired three years ago, I consider myself Semi-retired. In the meantime, I continued my consulting business, and now sell a great telephone system, and I've been lucky enough to sell to some really well-known clients around the US. I've been cutting back on work for the last two years. I'm doing more and more Volunteer work, more on that later. I like to travel and have been to 48 of the 50 states and would like to visit the last two soon, then start over. I like International travel too, I've been lucky enough to have visited many countries, and some a couple of times, such as Thailand. I must say Thailand is my favorite. I'm ready to go back and even looked into moving there for retirement but decided to stay here and continue to work but with a reduced workload. I've lived in Kentucky, Michigan, Colorado, Arkansas, Texas, Wisconsin, and keep coming back to Chicago. I moved back to Wheaton a couple of years ago., last year I decided that the suburbs were too expensive, and found a house south of I-80, I...Expand for more
'm close to Indiana only about 4 miles from the border, I receive my mail from Beecher Il, and live just off of Illinois 1 in a small group of houses in the middle of a field, This year i"m surrounded by Soybeans. I no longer ride motorcycles, I recently sold my Motorhome, the new owners seem to be really enjoying it. I'm starting to cut back on "things" and simplify life. I've been married and divorced. There are portions of each I liked. I've tried a couple of different businesses over the years, Insurance was first, and I also owned a restaurant for a while, I did enjoy it but I was exhausted all the time. Then I was in IT management for several decades. Now I enjoy selling PBX Business Phone Systems, the system is a VOIP system and I started at the very beginning of this new Technology, the Telephone Service business is more fun than anything I've done before, I really enjoy this. I don't even admit I'm an IT person anymore. I've been active in the USAF's Auxiliary, Civil Air Patrol,(CAP). I've been in CAP now for thirteen years and I recently made it to the grade of Lt. Col. I am currently serving as the Vice Commander of the Illinois Wing, CAP has three main missions; Cadet Programs working with youth ages 12-18, Aerospace Education, and Emergency Services such as Search and Rescue or Disaster Relief duties. USAF recently added CAP as part of their Total Force, CAP is a non-profit civilian organization, working closely with CAP has been very rewarding. I just recently completed my tour of duty, 3 years, as the Illinois WIng's Vice Commander, managing just over 1,000 volunteers, so rewarding to serve the Illinois Wing Members in this position.

I was just thinking how much technology has changed for the smaller, but the users have gotten larger.

On my way to NESA today. Help with setup for Mission Air Crew School, I think is my 15th year, minus COVID years. I'm looking forward to seeing old friends and meeting new ones.
Trying a new place today for lunch, it's near that great donut shop. Guess what dessert is.
