John's Story
Life
Born in Albany in 1942, I grew up in Oneonta. After graduating from Oneonta High School in 1960, I attended The State University College at Oneonta, majoring in secondary science education with concentrations in biology and chemistry. In 1963 I married Barbara Schroeder of Valley Stream, New York. They have been married now for 55 years. We hadtwo boys, Sean of Baltimore, Maryland, and Patrick, who passed away at 42.
I took a teaching position in Smithtown, on Long Island. He taught biology and chemistry, and coached soccer, golf, and bowling. In 1973 I became the chair of the science department at Smithtown HS West. In 1977 I became South Unit Principal at Smithtown HS East.
In 1981 I became Principal of Plattsburgh High School, where he served for just over eighteen years, retiring in October of 1999. In 200-2001 I served as Interim Superintendent at Willsboro Central School. I served as Superintendent in Westport, NY from 2008-2025. have a Masters in Arts, Teaching, From Brown University and a Doctorate in Education from The University of Vermont.
Following my retirement, Ibecame Executive Director of Section 7, NYSPHSAA. I also acted as Interim Director of Instruction at CEWW BOCES.
I was elected Area 9 Legislator, Clinton County Legislature, in November of 2000 and was re-elected in 2003. I County Democratic Committee in 2000 and left that position in 2006. I was re-elected to a third term as legislator in 2007 and a fourth term in 2011. I’m done now!

Following his graduation from SUCO, John took a teaching position in Smithtown, on Long Island. He taught biology and chemistry, and coached soccer, golf, and bowling. In 1973 John became the chair of the science department at Smithtown HS West. In 1977 he became South Unit Principal at Smithtown HS East.

John has served in a variety of posts in the communities where he and his family have resided. He was active as an Explorer Post Advisor on Long Island, worked with The Police Athletic League, and Coram Sports Association. He has served as a trustee and officer of The Kent-Delord Museum in Plattsburgh, as Chairman and member of the Stop DWI Advisory Board in Clinton County, advised the Plattsburgh High School Key Club and is Vice Chairman of the North Country Youth Board of The WIA Workforce Investment Board. John is also a member of the regional and Clinton County Workforce Investment Boards.
