John R.'s Story

Life Left Dade City right after graduation. Lived in Orlando for 2 years attending Valencia and UCF. Then on to Tallahassee where I finished college at FSU between work and parties at the Pi Kappa Phi fraternity house. Stayed on in Tally for a few years working, then on to Atlanta for 2 years of just crazy, wild times. 9 months working in Ottawa, Canada and then found myself back in Florida. Bought a house and settled down in Tampa with my two "pitbull" kids Buddy and Kayla. Life is good. College College years at FSU were great. Wish I could do it all over again knowing what I know now. I would have more fun than I did the first time but would also be a better student. I always wanted to be a entertainer when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was an insecure idea. As it turns out, they were sort of right. The wildest thing I ever did in school would be auctioning myself off in a slave auction when pledging Pi Kappa Phi. We were required to come down the stairs in a costume/theme (my theme was a cowboy, performing to "I Want to be a Cowboy") and strip for the female audience who then placed bids on us. For their money we were their slave for a day. The only saving grace for me was the fact that I was so intoxicated I don't remember a damn thing. But somewhere, out there, in the world at large, is a picture. If I could get together with one teacher from high school it would have to be, without a doubt, Frank Gentry. Being in DECA changed my life and were it not for Mr. Gentry I would never have gone to college or be where I am today. I would love to see him just to say the one thing I have never had the chance to say... "Thank you"... My best friend would tell you I talk a lot and am very opinionated, but people who don't know me very well would probably describe me as quiet, shy, and reserved. Not too many people know that I spent several years traveling as a competitive Country/Western dancer. Through the years I had two dance partners and generally always placed in the top 4 couples for each dance we performed. In addition, I taught dancing in a night club in Tallahassee for a couple of y...Expand for more
ears. Many years ago I entered the modeling arena and was recruited to enter a modeling competition called Models of the South. I took first place in the photo category, first place in the commercial category, and second place in the runway category. This landed me the opportunity to work with an A-list agency in Atlanta, but I blew the whole thing off to become a Computer Consultant... If I had one do-over in life I would make it to my one and only acting audition that would have landed me a Screen Actors Guild (SAG) card. I was up for the role of a police officer in an America's Most Wanted (re-inactment) scene. It was a union job and I would have been eligible for a SAG card. With that I could have moved to New York or LA and actually have had a chance. My audition was on a Sunday and I stayed up all weekend working at a Country Dance Competition. I was so tired I completely forgot about the audition until it was too late. My biggest surprise in life has been that no matter how old I get I can't ever seem to settle down or feel content with where I am and what I am doing. Some might call it stability, I call it stagnation. I thought certainly I would be settled into one career by 40. I guess I'm still trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow up.... Above all else I hope my old friends remember me as loyal. Friendship is very important to me. I spent years being very active in the night club social scene. No matter where I went I seemed to know a lot of people. As I have aged I find that I prefer having a handful of close friends. One thing I've found about my old friends is reconnecting after as much as 20 years I still feel close to them and that I can trust them with anything. I hope they feel the same about me. Hero's are an interesting topic for me. Unlike many people, I don't find my hero's in famous or even necessarily well known people. My hero's are many of my friends throughout life. I have had the incredible experience of meeting some of the most interesting and inspiring people. Hero's and inspiring people are not always where you expect them to be. Keep your eyes and heart open.
